A THRONE BUILT ON SAND / Chapter 4 / 4

Part 5: The Queen's Decree

Thirty days later. The Manhattan Supreme Court.

The heavy mahogany doors of the courtroom swung open. Claire walked in, flanked by two of the city's most ruthless divorce litigators. She wore a flawless, tailored emerald green blazer. She looked radiant, powerful, and utterly untouchable.

Sitting at the defense table was Daniel.

He was a ghost of his former self. His hair was unkempt, his eyes were sunken from a month of sleeping in a cheap apartment he could barely afford, and he wore an off-the-rack suit that fit him poorly. Beside him in the gallery sat Vivian, keeping her head bowed, hiding her face behind a cheap pair of sunglasses.

The judge, a stern-faced woman with zero tolerance for domestic abusers, slammed her gavel.

"Having reviewed the prenuptial agreement and the criminal conviction for second-degree domestic battery, the court finds the terms incredibly clear," the judge announced, her voice echoing across the silent room.

"Mr. Vance, due to the infidelity and abuse clauses triggered by your own actions, you forfeit all rights to alimony, marital properties, and shared investments. Miss Henderson retains one hundred percent of her pre-marital and marital assets."

The judge looked down at Daniel with blatant disgust. "You leave this marriage with exactly what you brought into it. Nothing. Court dismissed."

As the judge stood up, Daniel desperately pushed past his public defender and ran toward the aisle, blocking Claire’s exit.

"Claire, please!" Daniel begged, his voice cracking as tears spilled down his face. "I'm ruined! I have a criminal record! I can't get a job anywhere in the financial district! Please, just give me a settlement! Just enough to help my mother get a small apartment!"

Claire stopped. Her lawyers immediately stepped forward to push him away, but she raised a single, manicured hand, signaling them to stop.

She looked at Daniel. She looked at Vivian, who was trembling in the background.

"When you ate the food I cooked, you called it garbage," Claire said, her voice a calm, chilling whisper that cut deeper than any scream. "When you lived in the home I paid for, you called it yours. When you struck my face, you thought I was weak."

Claire stepped closer, looking directly into the broken eyes of the man who thought he could control her.

"I didn't ruin you, Daniel," she said softly. "I just removed the safety net. Now, you get to experience the life you actually deserve."

Claire walked past him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. She pushed open the heavy courtroom doors and stepped out into the brilliant, sunlit streets of New York, breathing in the sweet, unfiltered air of absolute freedom.
