Chapter 5 - The Contract Forged in Blood

Later that evening, after Mrs. Bellamy had taken over the watch in Lily's room, Lena found herself wandering the sprawling library where she had signed her life away the night before. The fire was lit, casting long, dancing shadows across the thousands of leather-bound books.
She poured herself a glass of water from a crystal carafe on a side table, her muscles aching from Silas’s brutal training session.
"You undermined my authority in front of my men."
The voice came from the deep shadows near the fireplace. Dominic stepped into the light, holding a tumbler of amber liquid. The jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and faded, intricate ink.
Lena didn't flinch. She set the water glass down and turned to face him. "You were treating a traumatized child like a hostile witness. You were scaring her, Mr. Rosetti."
"Dominic," he corrected quietly, walking toward the center of the room. "And I was trying to keep her heart from giving out. I am not a pediatrician, Lena. I am a man who solves problems with violence and capital. When my daughter was taken, all my resources proved utterly useless. I was powerless."
It was a staggering admission from a man who ruled the city’s underworld.
"She doesn't need your capital," Lena said softly, the anger draining out of her. "She just needs her father. But she needs him to be a safe place, not a war zone."
Dominic stopped a few feet away from her. He looked at her with an intensity that made Lena’s breath catch in her throat. The cold, calculating mafia boss was stripped away, leaving something far more dangerous—a man who recognized the value of the woman standing in front of him.
"Eva told me," Dominic murmured, staring at Lena’s face as if searching for a ghost. "Before she died on the delivery table. She made me swear to protect Lily from this life. I promised her I would. But this life doesn't let things go easily."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing the silver bracelet with the wolf's head charm and garnet eyes.
"This is the family crest," Dominic said. "It is a marker. It tells the underworld that the bearer is under the absolute, uncompromising protection of the Rosetti syndicate. Anyone who touches the bearer invites a war that will not end until their entire bloodline is eradicated."
He stepped closer, invading her personal space. The scent of woodsmoke and expensive cologne surrounded her.
"Lily wears one," Dominic said softly. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently wrapping around Lena’s bare wrist. "And now, so do you."
Lena’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm as he clasped the silver chain around her wrist. The metal was cool against her skin, the garnet eyes of the wolf winking in the firelight. It wasn't just a piece of jewelry. It was a collar. It was a shield. It was a declaration to the city that Lena Marks was no longer a nobody from a diner.
"You are mine now, Lena," Dominic said, his dark eyes locking onto hers, the words carrying a dual meaning that sent a shiver down her spine. "My daughter’s protector. My shadow. If the Vipers come back, they will have to go through me to get to you. And they will have to go through you to get to her."
Lena looked down at the wolf on her wrist, then up into the eyes of the man who had just rewritten her destiny. The rain was still beating against the tall windows of the library, but the cold could no longer touch her.

"Let them come," Lena whispered.
Dominic’s lips curved into a faint, dangerous smile. The contract was signed. The debt was paid. But as Lena stood in the firelight with the mafia boss, she realized the true cost of her new life had only just begun to accrue.
