Chapter 4 - The Monday Morning Massacre

The weekend was an agonizing descent into logistical hell for Andre. He had returned to a house that refused his entry code, forcing him to sleep on the sofa in his mother’s cramped condominium. His credit cards—tied to the joint accounts Danielle had frozen pending legal separation—declined at a coffee shop. His cell phone displayed only an ominous No Service icon. Brianna, after witnessing the catastrophic, humiliating end to his party, had mysteriously stopped responding to his emails.
But Andre possessed the dangerous, resilient delusion of a true narcissist. He convinced himself that Danielle was simply throwing a massive, hysterical tantrum. He believed that once he walked into the gleaming, glass-walled offices of Caldwell Logistics on Monday morning, his power would be restored. He was a VP. He was a closer. He would hire an aggressive lawyer, crush Danielle in court, and take back control of his life.
He drove his leased Porsche to the office complex, striding through the lobby with a manufactured air of supreme confidence.
He swiped his keycard at the executive elevator bank.
The light flashed red. ACCESS DENIED.
Andre frowned, wiping the card on his trousers and trying again. ACCESS DENIED.
"Having trouble, Mr. Reeves?"
Andre turned. Standing near the security desk was Martin Caldwell, the CEO and founder of the firm. Martin was an old-school, ruthless operator who valued discretion and loyalty above all else. And standing directly beside Martin Caldwell was Danielle.
She was wearing a sharp, slate-gray tailored suit. Her hair was pulled back, her expression unreadable. She did not look like a grieving wife. She looked like an apex predator.
"Martin," Andre stammered, his manufactured confidence instantly vaporizing. He looked from his boss to his wife. "What is going on here? Why is my card deactivated? What is she doing here?"
"Danielle requested a brief, informal meeting this morning, Andre," Martin said, his voice cold and devoid of its usual warmth. "She came to inform me of the impending dissolution of your marriage, and more importantly, to restructure the portfolio management."
Andre’s stomach dropped. "Portfolio management? What does my divorce have to do with the firm?"
"Everything," Danielle spoke for the first time, her voice echoing with terrifying calm across the marble lobby. "You seem to have forgotten, Andre, that your entire division’s revenue is anchored by the Vanguard Logistics account. An account that I secured for you three years ago through my father’s collegiate connections. An account that requires my signature as a shadow guarantor on the primary service level agreements."
Andre went entirely pale.
"I have formally withdrawn my guarantee," Danielle continued smoothly. "I spoke with the Vanguard board at seven o'clock this morning. They are terminating their contract with your division immediately due to a sudden lack of confidence in the account leadership."
Martin Caldwell folded his arms across his chest, staring at Andre with profound disgust. "You lost us a twenty-million-dollar account because you couldn't keep your ego in check at a birthday party, Andre. Your division is effectively bankrupt. The board met at eight. You are terminated, effective immediately. Security will box up your desk."
"You can't do this!" Andre shouted, the polished veneer cracking completely, revealing the frantic, desperate man beneath. He lunged toward Danielle, but the security guards stepped forward instantly, blocking his path. "You're destroying my career out of spite, Danielle!"

"I am not destroying anything, Andre," Danielle said, her voice dropping to a low, lethal register. "I am simply repossessing the foundation I built for you. You are free to stand on your own two feet now. Let’s see how tall you actually are."
As Danielle turned and walked toward the revolving doors, a tow truck pulled into the circular driveway outside the glass lobby. The driver stepped out, walked over to Andre’s beloved Porsche Taycan, and began hooking it up to the winch. The dealership had executed the lease termination right on schedule.
