Chapter 4 - The Velvet Trap

The transition from the shattered, flour-dusted ruins of my beloved bakery to the suffocating, opulent luxury of Lorenzo Vitale’s private world was jarring enough to give me emotional whiplash. I had expected him to call his men, perhaps leave a guard at the door, and go about his ruthless business. Instead, he had physically lifted me, ignoring my protests that I was covered in dirt and sugar, placed me into the back of a heavily armored, black SUV waiting in the alley, and ordered his silent, terrifyingly massive driver to take us away.
Now, I was standing in the center of a penthouse that occupied the entire top floor of a sleek, glass-and-steel skyscraper overlooking the glittering, sprawling expanse of the New York City skyline. The view was breathtaking, a dizzying sea of lights that made me feel incredibly small, but the interior of the apartment was what truly commanded attention. It was a masterpiece of dark, masculine elegance—rich mahogany, black leather, polished marble floors, and walls adorned with original artwork that I recognized from university textbooks. It was entirely silent, completely removed from the noise and grime of the city below. It was a fortress in the sky.
Lorenzo had disappeared into another room the moment we arrived, instructing a quiet, impeccably dressed housekeeper named Maria to show me to a guest bathroom. Maria had drawn a steaming bath, laid out an array of expensive, fragrant soaps, and, most surprisingly, left a dress for me on the vanity. My flour-caked, sugar-stained jeans and t-shirt had been quietly spirited away. In their place was a dress made of heavy, liquid crimson silk. It was simple, elegant, with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a slit that ran up the thigh. It fit me so perfectly it was terrifying, sliding over my skin like a second, incredibly expensive skin.
When I finally emerged from the bathroom, my dark hair falling in damp waves down my back, the lingering scent of jasmine soap clinging to my skin, I found Lorenzo standing in the massive living area. The lights had been dimmed, the room illuminated mostly by the ambient glow of the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the flickering light of a massive, modern fireplace. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie, the top buttons of his crisp black shirt undone, revealing the dark ink of the tattoos I had brazenly mocked the night before. He was holding two crystal glasses of dark red wine.
He turned as I entered, and his espresso eyes locked onto mine. The intensity in his gaze was a physical weight, pinning me to the floor. For a long, agonizingly silent moment, he simply looked at me, taking in the red silk, the damp hair, the nervous way I was twisting my fingers together. The predatory stillness of the mafia boss was still there, but it was mixed with a dark, burning hunger that made my heart hammer violently against my ribs.
"You look breathtaking, Alessia," he murmured, his voice a low, rough velvet caress that crossed the room and stroked down my spine. He walked toward me, offering me one of the crystal glasses. "Drink. It will help steady your nerves."
I took the glass, my fingers brushing against his warm skin. A jolt of electricity shot up my arm, and I nearly dropped the expensive crystal. I took a large swallow of the wine. It was rich, complex, and tasted like dark berries and old money—a vintage that probably cost more than my monthly rent.
"I don't understand what is happening," I said, my voice trembling slightly as I looked around the magnificent, terrifying room, avoiding his piercing gaze. "You brought me here. You gave me this dress. You told me the Morettis wouldn't bother me again. Why? Why are you doing this, Lorenzo? You don't know me. I am just a baker with a broken shop and massive debt. Men like you don't just hand out favors without expecting something monumental in return."
Lorenzo took a slow sip of his wine, his eyes never leaving my face. He closed the distance between us, his sheer physical presence overwhelming. "Men like me do exactly as we please, Alessia," he said softly, his tone carrying the absolute, unquestionable authority of a man who ruled an empire of violence. "I saw you last night. I saw the exhaustion dragging down your shoulders, the heavy, crushing weight of the world in your eyes, and yet, you still had the absolute, reckless fire to look a dangerous man in the face and tease him. You are a fighter. You have been fighting a losing war in that bakery for years, bleeding yourself dry for a ghost's dream."
May you like
He reached out, his knuckle gently trailing down the line of my jaw, sending a shiver cascading through my entire body. "I am going to wipe your debt clean. The Moretti family will be informed that your bakery is now under the exclusive, absolute protection of the Vitale syndicate. If anyone so much as looks at your display cases with ill intent, I will personally ensure they never see the light of day again. The commercial ovens will be replaced by tomorrow morning. You will never have to look over your shoulder, check your bank account with dread, or fear for your safety again."
I stared at him, my mind struggling to process the sheer magnitude of what he was offering. It was salvation. It was a miracle. But the crushing weight of my reality reminded me that miracles were never free. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to meet his dark, consuming gaze. "And what is the price, Lorenzo? What is the velvet trap waiting at the end of this incredibly generous offer? Because I am not a fool. I know what happens to women who owe favors to the head of the mafia. I will not become a pet kept in a beautiful, gilded cage."
