Chapter 4 - The Dismantling of an Heir

I tossed the phone onto the marble floor in front of Tristan.

An audio message began to play. It was Richard Montgomery, his voice frantic, weeping uncontrollably.

"Tristan, what the hell did you do?! Vance Holdings just executed a hostile takeover! The banks called in all our commercial loans! The accounts are frozen! We're ruined! You ruined us!"

Tristan stared at the phone in pure, unadulterated horror. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"You aren't an heir anymore, Tristan," I said, stepping closer and looking down at him. "You don't have a company. You don't have a trust fund. You don't have sports cars, and you don't even have a home to return to."

The sound of heavy boots echoed from the main entrance. The steel barriers momentarily lifted just enough to allow a squad of police officers to enter—led by the Police Commissioner himself, a man whose career was entirely funded by my father.

The Commissioner walked straight up to us. "Miss Vance. Mr. Vance. What are your orders?"

"Arrest him for aggravated assault and unlawful imprisonment," I said coldly.

"Unlawful imprisonment?" Tristan cried, tears spilling down his cheeks. "I didn't imprison you!"

"You physically blocked me from leaving the hallway earlier," I replied. "There are a hundred high-definition security cameras in this building. Every second of your arrogance is recorded. You will not be making bail."

Two officers grabbed Tristan by the arms, hauling him roughly to his feet. The diamond cufflinks he had so proudly adjusted earlier snapped off and clattered uselessly against the floor.

He sobbed, begging for mercy, but no one in the room moved an inch to help him.
