Chapter 4 - The Man Who Inherited a Lie

Adrian Blackwood did not run immediately.
He was too arrogant for that.
He believed the old rules still protected him.
Money.
Influence.
Family loyalty.
He arrived at Blackwood Industries headquarters the next morning for what he assumed would be another executive meeting.
Instead, he found federal investigators in the lobby.
Ethan was waiting in the boardroom.
For the first time in seven years, he sat at the head of the table.
Adrian entered wearing a navy suit and a confident smile.
“Ethan,” he said. “I heard there was some trouble at the estate. Is Lily’s caretaker all right?”
Ethan looked at him.
“Her name is Lily Blackwood.”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
The boardroom doors closed behind him.
A screen lit up.
On it appeared the DNA report.
Then Nora’s hospital ID badge.
Then the burner-phone messages.
Then the security footage from Ethan’s dining room.
Lily running across the marble floor.
Lily grabbing Ethan’s wrist.
Lily screaming for him not to drink the tea.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at,” he said.
“No,” Ethan replied. “I understand perfectly.”
Adrian turned toward the directors.
“This is a family matter. We should discuss it privately.”
“No,” Ethan said. “You hid my child. You arranged my wife’s death. You attempted to murder me. This stopped being private the moment you decided our family was collateral.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“You were weak.”
The boardroom went silent.
Ethan did not react.
Adrian continued.
“Claire died, and you collapsed. You abandoned the company. You abandoned the trust. You abandoned everyone who depended on you.”
“I grieved.”
“You vanished.”
“You used that grief to steal from me.”
“I saved the company.”
“You stole it.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You think a little girl changes anything? You think the board will hand you back control because you found a child?”
Ethan pressed a button.
The attorney seated beside him opened a file.
“Under the Blackwood Trust Charter,” she said, “the discovery of a direct surviving heir voids the provisional transfer of Mr. Ethan Blackwood’s voting shares. Effective immediately, Mr. Blackwood resumes full controlling interest.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You planned this.”
“No,” Ethan said. “You planned it. I merely survived it.”
Federal agents entered the boardroom.
Adrian looked toward Ethan one final time.
“You will regret bringing her into this world.”
Ethan stood.
“No,” he said. “You will regret believing she was ever yours to remove from it.”

The agents placed Adrian in handcuffs.
For the first time in seven years, Ethan did not look away.
