Chapter 5 - The Shift

The kitchen was quiet for a long moment, save for the cartoon voices from Lily's tablet.

"You didn't ruin anything," Mark finally said, his voice losing its sharp edge. "You were safe here, Elaine. And I won't let Richard touch you. If he tries to leverage last night, I will personally go to HR and testify to his harassment at the party."

Elaine looked at him. Really looked at him. She didn't see the quiet, grieving analyst who stayed out of the way. She saw a man who had faced the worst tragedy imaginable and still had the strength to protect people who couldn't protect themselves.

"Thank you," she breathed, the tension finally leaving her shoulders.

"Daddy?" Lily piped up, pulling her headphones down around her neck. She looked at Elaine with wide, curious eyes. "Is she the lady who got sick?"

Mark smiled gently. "Yes, Lily Pad. This is my boss, Elaine."

Lily scrutinized her for a moment. "I like your shirt. My mommy went to that school."

Elaine’s eyes softened, a genuine, warm smile breaking through her fear. She crouched down slightly to be at eye level with the little girl. "Your mommy must have been very smart. And you know what? Your daddy is a hero. He saved me last night."

Mark felt a strange, sudden warmth in his chest—a door unlocking that he had kept bolted shut for three years.

He didn't know what Monday morning at the office would look like. He didn't know how they were going to handle Richard Vance. But as he watched Elaine sit down at the kitchen table, asking Lily about her dance recital, Mark realized that the careful, isolated equation of his life had just been fundamentally altered.

And for the first time in three years, he didn't want to fix the math.
