Chapter 5 - The Baby They Could Not Take

Valeria gave birth the next morning.
A daughter.
She arrived just after sunrise with dark hair, tiny hands, and a furious cry that filled the hospital room.
When the nurse placed her against Valeria’s chest, Valeria began to cry.
Not because she was weak.
Because her daughter was safe.
Sebastián stood near the door.
He had not touched Valeria all night.
He had stayed awake in a chair outside the room while police took statements, lawyers filed emergency protective orders, and investigators examined the forged documents.
When the nurse asked if he wanted to hold the baby, Sebastián looked at Valeria.
He did not move until she nodded.
Only then did he come closer.
Their daughter opened her eyes.
Sebastián held her as though she were made of light.
“What is her name?” he whispered.
Valeria looked at him.
For months, Rebeca had tried to control everything.
The birth plan.
The nursery.
The custody papers.
Even the name of the baby.
But that moment belonged only to Valeria.
“Lucía,” she said.
Sebastián repeated it quietly.
“Lucía.”
He looked at Valeria with tears in his eyes.
“I am sorry.”
Valeria’s face remained calm.
“I know.”
“I should have believed you.”
“Yes.”
“I should have protected you.”
“Yes.”
He nodded, accepting every word.
“I do not expect forgiveness.”
“You should not.”
The honesty hurt him.
But he did not look away.
“I will spend the rest of my life earning whatever trust you decide I deserve,” he said.
Valeria looked down at Lucía.
Then at the morning light spreading across the hospital room.
For three years, she had begged Sebastián to see the truth.
Now he finally did.
But seeing was not enough.
He would need to act.
He would need to choose her when his family pressured him.
He would need to protect their daughter without turning protection into another kind of prison.
“I am leaving the Alcázar house,” Valeria said.
Sebastián nodded immediately.
“You should.”
“I am taking Lucía with me.”
“Yes.”
“And you will not decide where I go.”
“I will not.”
She studied him.
“Your mother and Octavio will never come near us.”
“They will not.”
“Not because you promise.”
He swallowed.
“Because the court will order it. And because I will make sure they cannot.”
Valeria looked at her daughter’s tiny face.
Outside, police escorted Rebeca Alcázar through a private hospital exit.
For the first time, her pearl earrings, perfect makeup, and ivory suit could not hide what she was.
A woman who tried to steal a child.
A woman who built her power on fear.
A woman whose own son finally chose the truth over her control.
Valeria kissed Lucía’s forehead.
“Don’t worry,” she whispered. “No one is taking you.”
Sebastián heard her.
His eyes closed briefly.
Then he stood back, giving Valeria the space she had needed all along.
Because this time, he understood.
