Chapter 3 - The Voice Inside the Silence

Dante was transferred that afternoon to a private rehabilitation facility outside Boston.

Gabriel had purchased an entire secured floor before the ambulance arrived.

No one questioned how he arranged it.

No one wanted to.

Clara rode in the ambulance beside Dante, monitoring his ventilator and IV lines while rain continued to fall across the city.

For the first time in days, she allowed herself to sit down.

Her body hurt.

Her throat was bruised.

The cut on her forehead required stitches.

But she could not stop looking at Dante.

“You scared me,” she whispered.

His eyes turned toward her.

“I know you did.”

One blink.

“Yes.”

She laughed softly despite herself.

“You are not allowed to do that again.”

One blink.

“Yes.

“Dante Falcone,” she said quietly, testing the name. “You really have been listening.”

His eyes closed briefly.

Then opened.

One blink.

At the new facility, Clara expected Gabriel to thank her and send her away.

Instead, he met her in the secured lobby with a folder in his hand.

“I want you to remain Dante’s primary nurse,” he said.

Clara stared at him.

“I work for St. Jude’s.”

“Not anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“I had my attorneys review your contract. You are free to accept employment elsewhere.”

“That is not the point.”

“No,” Gabriel said. “The point is whether you want to stay.”

Clara looked through the glass wall toward Dante’s room.

He was surrounded by new machines, new nurses, and new specialists.

But his eyes were searching the room.

Searching for her.

“I can’t be bought,” she said.

Gabriel nodded.

“I know.”

“Then why are you offering?”

“Because my brother trusts you.”

The words settled between them.

“Trust is not something he gives easily,” Gabriel continued. “Neither do I.”

Clara looked at the folder.

The offer included double her salary, housing near the facility, full legal protection, and funding to finish the advanced neurological nursing certification she had always wanted but could never afford.

It was generous.

Too generous.

“This is a lot,” she said.

“My brother’s life is a lot.”

She looked at Gabriel carefully.

“And what do you expect from me?”

“The same thing you gave him before you knew his name.”

Clara closed the folder.

“I will stay,” she said. “But I have conditions.”

Gabriel’s eyebrow lifted.

“Conditions?”

“Dante receives medical care based on medical decisions. Not mafia decisions. Not revenge. Not family pride.”

Gabriel almost smiled again.

“Agreed.”

“And if there is danger, I get to know.”

“Agreed.”

“And no one brings weapons into his room.”

That time, Gabriel actually laughed.

A short, surprised sound.

“Miss Hayes,” he said, “you are negotiating with Gabriel Falcone.”

“No,” Clara replied. “I am advocating for my patient.”

From inside the room, Dante’s monitor increased by several beats.

Gabriel glanced toward it.

“He agrees with you.”

Over the following weeks, Clara helped Dante learn to communicate through an eye-controlled device. The first sentence he typed took nearly forty minutes.

CLARA DID NOT LEAVE.

She read it twice.

Then sat beside his bed and cried.

Dante watched her quietly.

His second sentence appeared later that night.

DO NOT CRY FOR ME.

Clara wiped her face.

“I’ll cry if I want to.”

A pause.

Then the device displayed:

THAT IS FAIR.

Slowly, Dante began revealing what happened in Palermo.

Victor Sanz had not only arranged the ambush.

He had recruited someone inside Gabriel’s organization.

Someone who knew Dante’s routes.

Someone who knew where he was hidden.

Someone who had enough influence to freeze the trust accounts and direct Dr. Gable to prepare the transfer.

The traitor was close.

Very close.

Gabriel wanted names.

Dante wanted time.

Clara wanted Dante to heal before he was dragged back into the violent world that nearly killed him.

But danger was already moving toward them.

One night, Dante used the eye-controlled device to type a new message.

THE TRAITOR IS NOT IN GABRIEL’S CREW.

Clara leaned forward.

“Then who is it?”

His eyes held hers.

The next words appeared slowly.

May you like

HE IS IN THE FAMILY.
