Chapter 4: A Mother's Hidden Promise

The high-tech security alarms of the Crystal Plaza Hotel began to blare a low, mechanical horn that echoed through the grand ballroom, the brilliant crystal chandeliers flickering twice before dropping into a dim emergency red light mode. The billionaires and politicians panicked, scrambling over the wooden pews to find the exits as the tactical operators began clearing the floor with firm, military precision.
"Daniel! Please! You have to stop them!" Victoria screamed, her hands grabbing her husband's wet tuxedo jacket as the rain began to beat heavily against the grand glass windows. "Talk to your mother's lawyers! There must be a loophole! A ninety-day grace period for the default!"
Daniel looked at his wife, his face an unreadable mask of cold steel. He slowly reached down and loosened her fingers from his jacket, stepping away from her toward the head table. "There is no grace period for a man who watches his family pour wine on an old man’s head, Victoria. You lied to me about your father for three years. You made me believe you were a lonely orphan from Boston while the man who gave you life was painting walls in the lower district."
"I did it for us, Daniel!" Victoria sobbed, her beautiful white wedding gown looking ridiculous under the flashing red emergency lights. "If your mother knew the truth, she would have cut you off from the inheritance! She would have given the CEO chair to Julian Vance!"
"Julian Vance is already inside the vault, Daniel," Sophia said, her voice quiet but sharp like a razor as she walked up to the desk terminal. She had picked up the dark wooden box and was tracing the silver railroad watch with her finger. "Look at the screen, Daniel. Your cousin Julian isn't trying to help your mother save the company. He’s currently downloading the primary registry files from your father's old database in the basement."
Daniel snapped his head around, his eyes narrowing into dark slits. "What did you say? Julian is in the archives?"
"Yes, sir," Commander Drake said, stepping up to the desk, his tactical tablet showing a live internal security feed. The screen displayed a dark hallway lit only by emergency red lamps. A figure in a black silk tuxedo—Julian Vance—was standing in front of the primary server rack, inserting a physical override keycard into the system.
"He’s downloading the 'Project Callisto' files, Mr. Brooks," Drake explained, his voice grave. "The files that contain the original digital signatures of your father’s illegal offshore transfers from 2016. If Julian gets those drives, he won't save your shipping fleets—he will sell them to the European Maritime Syndicate to pay off his own gambling debts in Macau."
Daniel felt a sudden, sharp wave of adrenaline clear the exhaustion from his mind. He looked at his mother Eleanor, who had collapsed onto a velvet sofa, hyperventilating as her personal assistant Vanessa tried to offer her a glass of water.
"Arthur," Daniel barked, turning to the family attorney. "Come with me. We're going to the basement archives. Nobody destroys my father’s legacy while I am still standing in this building."

"Daniel, wait!" Victoria called out, trying to follow him, but her long lace veil caught on the edge of a gold-trimmed chair, tearing completely away from her hair as she stumbled onto her knees on the red carpet.
Daniel didn't look back. He sprinted through the side exit doors of the ballroom, his heavy leather dress shoes flying down the concrete steps leading to the subterranean levels of the hotel, his heart burning with an intense, quiet rage. He had spent his whole life trying to prove to his mother that he was worthy of the Brooks name, and tonight, he was going to find out exactly what kind of monster his father had turned into before he died.
