Chapter 9 - The Lion’s DenStepping back into Manhattan felt like walking back into a cage.

But this time, Amy wasn't alone.

They bypassed the Harrison family penthouse entirely. Daniel had booked the entire top floor of the Plaza Hotel under a dummy corporation. Claire was safely tucked away in the master suite with a trusted nanny that Daniel had flown in from London.

In the living room of the suite, a war council was taking place.

Daniel had assembled a team of six ruthless corporate litigators. Hayes was sitting on the sofa next to Amy, his hand resting reassuringly on her knee. His presence in the ultra-luxurious suite was a glaring contrast to the polished lawyers, but Amy drew strength from his grounding silence.

"Eleanor is hosting the Harrison Foundation’s annual gala tonight at the Met," the lead attorney explained, pointing to a tablet. "She invited every major news outlet. She is planning to give a speech about 'family values' and announce her intention to establish a trust for Claire—forcing the custody issue into the public eye."

"She’s trying to corner me," Daniel growled, pacing the floor like a caged panther. "If I publicly oppose her, I look like the villain keeping a grandmother from her grandchild. If I stay silent, she controls the narrative."

"Then we don't stay silent," Amy said.

Everyone in the room turned to her.

Amy stood up, smoothing the front of her simple, elegant dress. "Your mother thinks I’m the weak link, Daniel. She thinks because I left this world, I am afraid of it. She expects you to fight her in the boardroom. She doesn't expect me to fight her in public."

Daniel stopped pacing. "Amy... what are you saying?"

"I am going to that gala tonight," Amy stated, her voice cold and unyielding.

"Absolutely not," Daniel snapped. "It’s a firing squad. The press will tear you apart."

"Let them try," Amy countered. "If we hide in this hotel, it proves her point. It proves we have something to hide. But if the three of us walk onto that red carpet together—you, me, and Hayes—it destroys her entire narrative."

The lead lawyer adjusted his glasses. "Ms. Harrison... from a PR standpoint, it is a massive risk. But if executed correctly, presenting a united front between a divorced couple and a new partner completely shatters the 'isolated, extortionist ex-wife' angle."

Daniel stared at Amy. He saw the fire in her eyes—the exact same fire that had given her the strength to walk away from him three years ago. Only this time, she was using it to protect what they had built together.

Daniel looked at Hayes. The two men had barely spoken since Oregon. There was no hostility, only the complex, unspoken territory of two men who cared deeply for the same woman, in entirely different ways.

"Can you handle the press pool?" Daniel asked Hayes directly.

Hayes stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked massive, imposing, and completely unfazed. "I deal with unstable foundations for a living, Harrison. A few guys with cameras aren't going to rattle me. I’m with her."

Daniel nodded slowly. He looked back at Amy.

"Alright," Daniel said. "We go to the gala. We show them the truth."

Three hours later, a fleet of black Maybachs pulled up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The steps were lined with hundreds of photographers, reporters, and the absolute elite of New York society.

Inside, Eleanor Harrison was preparing to give her tearful, manipulative speech.

But outside, the narrative was about to violently flip.

When the car door opened, Daniel stepped out first. The flashbulbs erupted into a blinding frenzy. But instead of walking up the stairs alone, Daniel turned and held out his hand.

Amy stepped out. She didn't wear a heavy, ostentatious gown like she used to. She wore a sleek, emerald-green dress that commanded attention through its simplicity.

And right behind her was Hayes.

The press began to shout, completely bewildered by the sight.

"Daniel! Are you here to support your mother's custody bid?" a reporter screamed over the noise.

Daniel stopped at the bottom of the stairs. He didn't look angry. He looked completely, utterly in control.

"I am here to support the mother of my child," Daniel’s voice echoed powerfully through the microphones. "And to formally announce that my mother, Eleanor Harrison, has been permanently removed from the Harrison Board of Directors due to her attempts to manipulate the press and harass my family."

The entire red carpet went dead silent.

Amy stood tall, flanked by the billionaire she had reformed and the builder she loved. The girl who used to cry in the shadows was dead.

The queen of her own life had arrived.
