Chapter 4 - The Princess Who Came Home

The Sovereign did not take Serena to a palace.
It took her to a private island off the coast of Sicily.
The Moretti estate stood above the water, built from pale stone and guarded by olive trees older than the country Serena had tried to disappear into.
She had not returned there in seven years.
Not since the night her father was killed.
Not since she took a new name, moved to America, and decided that a quiet life with Elias Mercer might save her from the bloodline she was born into.
When she stepped onto the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, memories came back all at once.
Her father teaching her to sail.
Her mother singing in the garden.
Her uncle Damiano standing at the gate with a gun in his hand after the first attack.
Her older brother, Luca, promising he would protect her.
Then the silence after they were gone.
Damiano stood beside her now.
“You do not have to stay,” he said.
Serena looked toward the water.
“I know.”
“You can return to Charleston.”
“No.”
“Do you want us to make Elias regret what he did?”
Serena turned sharply.
Damiano’s expression was unreadable.
But she knew him.
He had spent years fighting wars in the family’s name. He solved betrayal in ways that left no room for repeat mistakes.
“No,” she said. “You will not touch him.”
“He hurt you.”
“He did.”
“He used your quietness against you.”
“Yes.”
Damiano’s jaw tightened.
“And you still protect him?”
“I am not protecting him,” Serena said. “I am refusing to become what I ran from.”
The wind moved through the olive trees.
Damiano studied her for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“As you wish, Principessa.”
She hated the title.
Not because it was untrue.
But because it reminded her of everything that title had taken from her.
“I’m not a princess,” she said softly.
Damiano looked out at the sea.
“No,” he replied. “You are stronger than one.”
Over the following weeks, Serena learned the truth about the empire her father left behind.
She had inherited the Vale Maritime Trust, a network of legal shipping assets, ports, investment holdings, and charitable foundations spread across Europe and the United States.
Her family had placed the trust beyond Damiano’s direct control.
Not because they did not trust him.
Because they wanted Serena to have a choice.
She could claim the inheritance.
Or she could walk away forever.
For years, she had chosen to walk away.
But Leonard Voss changed that.
His name appeared in records Damiano’s investigators brought to her within days of her return.
Leonard had been skimming money from Vale Maritime Trust through shell foundations.
He had used Mercer Group’s expansion plans as cover to gain access to Charleston port leases.
He encouraged Elias to isolate Serena because he believed she would be too emotionally exhausted to review the trust records.
And Claudia?
Claudia was not merely Elias’s mistress.
She was Leonard’s niece.
She had been placed near Elias years earlier, first as a consultant, then as a friend, then as the woman who would make Serena appear unnecessary.
The entire divorce had been engineered.
Not because Serena lacked value.
Because Leonard knew exactly how much value she held.
When Damiano handed Serena the files, she did not cry.
She read every page.
Every transfer.
Every forged document.
Every message between Leonard and Claudia.
Then she made one call.
“Bring me the trustees,” she said.
Damiano watched her carefully.
“What are you planning?”
Serena closed the file.
“Nothing illegal.”
His eyebrow rose.
“Nothing violent.”
“Even more surprising.”
“I’m going to remove Leonard Voss from every board, every account, every trust, and every business he touched.”
Damiano smiled faintly.
“And Elias Mercer?”
Serena looked at the old wedding ring still resting in a velvet box on her desk.
“He made his choice.”
Then she picked up the phone again.
May you like
“And now I make mine.”
