Chapter 4 - The Family Empire Built on Lies

The recorded call changed the case.

Within hours, Helena obtained an emergency court order freezing the transfer of Camila’s mother’s home. Police raided the offices of Gustavo Ferraz’s development company and recovered financial records that connected him directly to Dona Lourdes, Patrícia, Marcelo, and the network of shell companies created with Ricardo’s stolen money.

The betrayal was bigger than anyone expected.

For eighteen months, Ricardo’s family had used his overseas work schedule as cover.

Whenever he traveled to Dubai, New York, Lisbon, or Singapore, Dona Lourdes would tell him everything at home was stable.

Camila was “fine.”

The household was “running smoothly.”

The family businesses were “growing.”

But behind those cheerful updates, they were draining accounts, forging approvals, and placing debts in Ricardo’s name.

They had even used his restaurant company to submit fake invoices for catering events that never happened.

The party Ricardo walked into was not an isolated celebration.

It was a habit.

A lifestyle.

A victory dance paid for by his absence.

Marcelo was arrested first.

Investigators found that he had been using company accounts to fund gambling debts and luxury purchases. He had assumed Ricardo’s money would always be there to rescue him.

Patrícia was charged next.

Her fingerprints were on documents that forced Camila into signing false household payroll records. She had also transferred money from accounts she controlled into a secret account under her husband’s name.

Dona Lourdes fought the hardest.

She hired expensive lawyers and gave interviews claiming that Camila had “manipulated” Ricardo against his family.

But then the clinic records became public in court.

The judge read the medical notes aloud.

Camila’s bleeding.

The recommendation for hospital care.

Dona Lourdes’s refusal.

The false statements about Camila’s mental state.

The room went silent.

Ricardo sat beside Camila, his hand tightly around hers.

Across the courtroom, Dona Lourdes looked at him.

For a brief second, she did not look angry.

She looked confused.

As though she genuinely could not understand why her son was not defending her.

During a recess, she asked to speak with him.

Helena advised against it.

Camila looked at Ricardo.

“You don’t owe her anything,” she said.

“I know.”

“Then why go?”

“Because I need to hear who she thinks she is.”

He met his mother in a private room with two attorneys present.

Dona Lourdes sat straight-backed in her chair, still wearing gold earrings despite everything.

“Ricardo,” she said. “You have to stop this.”

He remained standing.

“Stop what?”

“Destroying your family.”

Ricardo stared at her.

“You destroyed this family.”

“No. I protected it.”

“You stole from me.”

“I invested for all of us.”

“You forged my name.”

“I made decisions you were too busy to make.”

“You forced Camila to work in my home.”

Dona Lourdes’s expression hardened.

“She needed to learn gratitude.”

Ricardo’s breath caught.

“She lost our baby.”

His mother looked away.

“She was weak.”

The words landed in the room like broken glass.

Ricardo felt his entire body go cold.

For years, he had believed his mother was strong because she survived hardship.

Now he understood that strength without compassion becomes cruelty.

“You knew she was pregnant,” he said.

Dona Lourdes did not answer.

“You knew she was bleeding.”

“She was always dramatic.”

“You refused medical care.”

“I was trying to prevent a scandal.”

Ricardo leaned closer.

“My wife’s life was never a scandal.”

Dona Lourdes lifted her chin.

“She was never good enough for you.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said, “She was the only person in this family who was.”

He walked out.

The trial lasted seven weeks.

Witnesses came forward.

Former staff members described how Camila was ordered to clean, cook, and serve guests while Dona Lourdes told everyone she was “lazy.”

A driver testified that he was instructed to keep Camila from leaving the mansion without permission on several occasions.

The private clinic nurse testified that Camila begged to call Ricardo.

And Daniel, the forensic accountant, showed the court exactly how millions had vanished through fake businesses.

When the verdict arrived, there was no joy.

Only consequence.

Dona Lourdes was convicted of fraud, forgery, coercion, and medical negligence-related charges. Patrícia and Marcelo were also convicted, though their sentences were reduced after they cooperated against Ferraz.

Gustavo Ferraz faced the longest sentence for his role in the broader financial scheme.

After the final hearing, Ricardo and Camila returned to the mansion.

It was still beautiful.

The fresh paint.

The grand staircase.

The marble floors.

But beauty could not erase what had happened there.

Camila stood near the outdoor kitchen doorway.

Ricardo watched her quietly.

“I don’t want to live here anymore,” she said.

He nodded.

“Then we won’t.”

“But you built this.”

“I built walls,” Ricardo replied. “A home is something else.”

Three months later, they sold the mansion.

Not because they needed the money.

Because they needed a future without ghosts.

Ricardo bought a smaller house near a lake outside Campinas.

It had a wide porch, a vegetable garden, and a kitchen filled with sunlight.

No marble halls.

No staff quarters.

No rooms built for appearances.

Camila chose every detail herself.

She painted the kitchen cabinets pale green. She filled the living room with books. She planted jasmine near the front gate because she loved the scent at night.

Ricardo learned to cook the meals she used to make in their first apartment.

At first, he was terrible.

He burned rice.

He ruined feijoada.

He once forgot salt entirely.

Camila laughed so hard she cried.

And Ricardo loved hearing it.

Because for the first time in a long time, her laughter did not carry fear behind it.

One evening, they sat together on the porch as the sun went down.

Ricardo brought out the velvet box he had carried home from Dubai.

Camila looked at it.

“The necklace?”

He nodded.

“I bought it because I thought expensive things could show you how much I loved you.”

She opened the box.

The diamonds caught the last light of the day.

“It’s beautiful,” she said.

“But it is not enough.”

Camila looked at him.

“No,” she agreed. “It isn’t.”

Ricardo smiled sadly.

“I know.”

He took her hand.

“So I am giving you something else too.”

He placed a folder beside her.

Inside was the deed to the new house.

Only Camila’s name was on it.

She stared at the page.

“Ricardo…”

“You will never again need permission to feel safe in your own home.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

May you like

Then she leaned into him.

And for the first time since he returned from Brazil, Ricardo felt like he had finally come home.
