Chapter 13 - The Boardroom ExecutionThere is a distinct difference between legal defense and a public slaughter. In a courtroom, the truth is filtered through bureaucracy. But in front of the press and elite shareholders, the truth belongs to whoever holds the heaviest ammunition.

The grand ballroom of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, and sheer, intoxicating wealth. The elite of Seattle’s corporate sector mingled, entirely unaware that the foundation of their world was about to be ripped out from beneath them.

Vanessa stood near the main stage, wearing a stunning, backless silver gown. She was surrounded by sycophantic board members, basking in the glow of her untouchable superiority. Ethan stood a few feet away, looking exhausted and hollow, a king who had slowly realized his castle was entirely made of sand.

Vanessa believed she had won. She believed that by tomorrow, I would be sitting in a federal interrogation room.

She was incredibly, fatally wrong.

Declan and I did not have invitations. We didn't need them.

I wore a sweeping, floor-length gown of midnight blue silk. I did not look like a scapegoat. I looked like an apex predator. Declan walked beside me in a flawless black tuxedo, radiating an aura of lethal, terrifying power that forced the crowds to physically part for us.

When Vanessa saw me walking down the center aisle, her smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. She whispered something to the private security guards, who immediately began moving toward us.

But they were too late.

I stepped onto the edge of the stage, pulling a sleek, encrypted tablet from my velvet clutch.

"Good evening, Vanessa," I projected my voice, sharp and crystal clear, cutting through the ambient noise of the gala. Hundreds of heads turned toward us. The flashbulbs of the financial press instantly erupted.

Ethan’s head snapped up. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he looked at me.

"Security!" Vanessa hissed, losing her aristocratic composure entirely. "Remove this woman! She is under federal investigation!"

"I wouldn't do that, Vanessa," I said, my voice echoing through the massive room. "Unless you want me to explain to your lovely shareholders exactly how you funded your new European real estate ventures."

"You are making a massive mistake, Emily," Vanessa threatened, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Leave right now, or the SEC will freeze your firm by midnight."

"The SEC is no longer looking at my firm," I smiled smoothly. "Because while you were busy trying to frame me for your embezzlement, my forensic accountants were auditing your servers."

Vanessa turned the color of ash.

I tapped a single button on my tablet.

The massive digital screens behind the stage—screens meant to display the Carter Holdings logo—suddenly flickered to life. They shifted to display the master ledger of Vanessa’s offshore syndicates, complete with the Luxembourg routing numbers and her brother's name highlighted in bright red.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I announced, turning to face the shocked crowd. "Vanessa is not a pioneer of corporate transparency. She is the architect of a forty-million-dollar embezzlement scheme. She stole from your pension funds, wired the capital to a shell company in Europe, and attempted to forge federal documents to frame me for the theft."

The ballroom erupted in chaos. Gasps echoed through the room. Board members physically backed away from Vanessa as if she were contagious. Ethan stared at the screens, the reality of his profound, catastrophic blindness hitting him with physical force.

"This is a cyber attack!" Vanessa shrieked, her mask completely destroyed. "She hacked my servers! This is corporate defamation!"

"It is an indictment," I corrected her, staring dead into her panicked eyes.

The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

Two dozen federal agents from the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division poured into the room, their badges flashing under the chandeliers. They bypassed the crowd completely and marched straight toward the stage.

"Vanessa Hale," the lead agent boomed, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, federal wire fraud, and perjury. Put your hands behind your back."

Vanessa stumbled backward, completely paralyzed. The arrogant, untouchable mistress who had stolen my life was reduced to a pathetic, shivering criminal in front of every major news outlet on the West Coast.

As the agents wrenched her arms behind her back, she glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

May you like

"You ruined me!" she screamed as they dragged her away.

"No, Vanessa," I said softly, my voice devoid of any pity. "I just balanced the books."
