Chapter 4 - The First Visit

Clare allowed Ethan to meet Oliver two weeks later.

The visit took place at a small public garden in Brooklyn.

Oliver sat in a sandbox wearing a green jacket, filling a yellow truck with dirt and dumping it onto his own shoes.

Ethan arrived early.

He wore jeans, a plain coat, and no watch.

He had bought no gift.

Only a picture book about construction vehicles.

Clare noticed.

“You came empty-handed?”

“I did not know what he likes.”

“He likes trucks.”

Ethan held up the book.

“I guessed.”

Clare took it and looked at the cover.

Oliver noticed them.

“Mommy!”

Clare crouched beside him.

“Oliver, this is Ethan.”

The boy studied him.

“Ethan?”

“Yes,” Clare said.

Ethan knelt several feet away.

“Hi, Oliver.”

Oliver stared at him.

Then pointed to Ethan’s shoes.

“Not step on you today.”

Ethan’s throat tightened.

“You can step on my shoes if you want.”

Oliver considered this seriously.

Then he walked over and placed one tiny foot on Ethan’s boot.

“Now I sorry,” he said.

Ethan smiled despite himself.

“That is okay.”

Oliver climbed back into the sandbox.

For the next hour, Ethan sat on the edge and helped him build a crooked road for the toy truck.

He learned that Oliver loved excavators, hated raisins, and called every bird “Mr. Sky.”

When a little girl grabbed Oliver’s truck, he began to cry.

Ethan’s instinct was to call someone, solve it, remove the problem.

Instead, he looked at Clare.

She nodded toward Oliver.

So Ethan stayed beside him.

“That was your truck,” he said.

Oliver rubbed his eyes.

“Mine.”

“I know. It is okay to be upset.”

Oliver looked at him.

“Sad?”

“Yes. Sad.”

The little boy leaned against Ethan’s arm.

Only for a second.

But Ethan did not move.

He barely breathed.

At the end of the visit, Oliver held up the truck.

“Ethan come again?”

Clare looked at Ethan.

He did not answer quickly.

He knew the wrong response would be a promise too large to prove.

“If your mom says it is okay,” he told Oliver, “I would like that.”

Oliver nodded.

“Okay.”

Clare watched him.

For the first time, she saw Ethan choose patience over control.

It was not enough.

But it was a beginning.
