Chapter 2 - The Sister in the Shadows

Christmas morning dawned bright, cold, and blindingly white over New York City. At 7:00 AM, Clare’s phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was a text from Harrison.

The pipe burst was worse than expected. Had to stay on-site to manage the contractors. I’ll be home by noon. We can talk then. Merry Christmas, Clare.

Clare didn't reply. She was already dressed in a sharp, tailored black winter coat, standing inside the vault room of the First Manhattan Depository. Because she was still legally Harrison's wife and held power of attorney on his personal accounts, gaining access to the family's older deposit boxes had required nothing more than her signature, her ID, and a charming smile to the holiday skeleton crew.

She inserted the brass key. The heavy steel door clicked open.

Inside rested a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax. Clare broke the seal. There it was: the true, legally notarized final will and testament of William Mercer, executed just two weeks before his death, naming Eleanor Parker as the majority shareholder of Mercer Real Estate Holdings. Alongside it was a birth certificate and a detailed private investigator's dossier on Eleanor’s current whereabouts.

Eleanor wasn't living in a penthouse. According to the file, she was a thirty-six-year-old high school English teacher living in a modest apartment in Queens, completely unaware that she was the rightful heir to a billion-dollar real estate empire.

By 9:00 AM, Clare was sitting in a quiet, unassuming diner in Astoria, nursing a cup of decaf coffee. Across from her sat Eleanor Parker.

Eleanor had William’s piercing blue eyes and the same sharp, intelligent jawline. She had looked wary when Clare first approached her apartment building, but curiosity had won out. Now, looking at the documents spread across the sticky diner table, Eleanor’s face was completely drained of color.

"My mother told me my father was a traveling salesman who died when I was a baby," Eleanor whispered, her fingers trembling as she traced the signature on the will. "She never wanted to talk about him. You're telling me that William Mercer... the billionaire... was my father?"

"Yes," Clare said gently, sliding the handwritten letter toward her. "And he loved you enough at the end to try and make things right. But your half-brother, my husband, decided his greed was more important than your existence."

Eleanor read the letter, tears silently spilling over her lashes. She looked up at Clare, taking in her pregnant belly and the dark circles under her eyes. "Why are you doing this? If I take this to court, your husband loses his company. He loses his wealth. Which means your child loses it, too."

Clare rested her hands on her stomach. "My child doesn't need money stolen from her aunt. My child needs a mother who isn't afraid of monsters. Harrison chose to spend Christmas Eve with his mistress, Eleanor. He thought I would stay home and cry. Instead, I found you."

Eleanor wiped her eyes, a sudden, fierce spark igniting in her gaze—a spark that looked terrifyingly like William Mercer. "What do we do now?"

Clare smiled, a dangerous, calculating expression. "Now, we let him think he got away with everything. And then, we take his entire world."
