PART 2: The Unthinkable Plea

The screams echoing through the hallways of the eighty-million-dollar Sterling estate didn't sound like a child throwing a tantrum.

They sounded like pure, unadulterated agony.

Julian Sterling, the ruthless CEO of Sterling Global, dropped his leather briefcase onto the marble floor and sprinted up the grand staircase. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. He pushed open the heavy oak doors to the master nursery, his eyes frantically scanning the massive room.

His six-year-old son, Leo, was curled into a tight, trembling ball on the edge of the oversized bed. The boy’s face was deathly pale, drenched in cold sweat, his tear-streaked eyes wide with a terror that no child should ever know.

"Leo!"

Julian dropped to his knees beside the bed, reaching out to comfort his son.

But the moment Julian’s hand brushed against Leo’s shoulder, the boy let out a blood-curdling shriek and violently recoiled. He clutched his left arm, which was encased in a thick, heavy white plaster cast from his wrist all the way up to his shoulder.

"Daddy, make it stop!" Leo sobbed, his small body convulsing as he violently dug his fingernails into his own thighs. "Please, Daddy! It hurts so much!"

"I know, buddy, I know," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking as helplessness washed over him. "The doctor said a spiral fracture takes time to heal. You just have to be brave for a little longer."

Leo violently shook his head, his wide eyes completely wild.

"No! No, it’s eating me! There’s monsters in the white rock!" Leo screamed, his voice turning raw and raspy. He grabbed Julian’s expensive suit jacket with his one good hand, pulling his powerful billionaire father close.

"Cut it off," the little boy whispered, his eyes filled with absolute, horrifying sincerity.

Julian froze. "What?"

"Cut my arm off, Daddy. Please. Get a knife from the kitchen and cut it off. I don’t want it anymore! Cut it off!"

Julian felt the blood drain from his face. A cold, suffocating dread wrapped around his throat. His son wasn't just in pain; he was losing his mind.

"Hush, darling, shh."

A soft, melodic voice floated into the room.

Victoria, Julian’s stunningly beautiful new wife, glided through the doorway. She was dressed in flawless silk loungewear, carrying a small silver tray with a glass of water and a bright blue pill. Her face was a perfect mask of maternal concern, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

"The poor angel is just delirious from the phantom pain," Victoria murmured sympathetically, sitting gracefully on the opposite edge of the bed. She reached out, her perfectly manicured fingers gently stroking Leo’s forehead.

But standing in the dark shadows of the hallway, Maria, the family’s veteran nanny, saw what Julian completely missed.

Maria saw how Leo’s tiny muscles completely locked up the second Victoria entered the room.

She saw the way the boy’s terrified eyes darted not toward his broken arm, but toward Victoria’s hands.

And most chillingly of all, Maria noticed that the heavy plaster cast on Leo’s arm wasn't signed by any doctors, and it didn't look like the standard fiberglass casts used at the elite private hospital Julian claimed he was treated at.

"Here, sweet boy," Victoria cooed, holding up the heavy blue pill. "Take your medicine. It will make all the nasty monsters go away."

Leo squeezed his eyes shut and whimpered like a beaten dog, pressing himself as far away from his stepmother as the bed would allow.
