Chapter 5 - The Demolition

Derek froze, turning to look at me as if I had spoken in a foreign language. "What are you talking about? The permits are cleared. We hold the lease on the land."
"You hold a provisional lease," I corrected him, resting my hands on the table. "A lease granted by Vanguard Holdings. A lease that explicitly states any evidence of financial malfeasance, corporate fraud, or misappropriation of funds results in an immediate, non-negotiable termination of the land use agreement."
Derek stared at me, his eyes wide, his mind failing to connect the dots. "Vanguard Holdings? What does Vanguard have to do with you? They're a blind trust!"
"They were a blind trust," I smiled, a cold, victorious expression that finally matched the ice in my chest. "Until the sole managing director decided to step out of the shadows."
The realization hit him with the force of a wrecking ball. The oxygen completely left his lungs. He slumped back in his chair, his broad shoulders collapsing, the arrogant titan of industry reduced to a terrified, broken man in a matter of seconds.
"You..." Derek gasped, his voice barely a whisper. "You own the land."
"I own the land," I confirmed, my voice ringing with absolute finality. "I own the deed to the EaDo project. I own the commercial leases on your corporate offices. I built this empire, Derek, and I allowed you to put your name on the door."
I turned my attention to Martin, who was watching the execution with a mixture of shock and profound respect.
"Martin," I said professionally. "As of 8:00 AM tomorrow, Ashford & Marsh is officially evicted from the EaDo development site. The corporate lease is terminated. However, Vanguard Holdings would be more than happy to absorb your investment capital directly and hire a competent, ethical development firm to complete the project without billing you for couples massages."
Martin didn't hesitate. He looked at Derek with absolute contempt, then looked at me and nodded. "I'll have my lawyers call you in the morning, ma'am."
Derek was hyperventilating, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes. Paige had already pushed her chair back, grabbing her purse, preparing to flee the sinking ship she had helped drill holes into.
"Adriana, please," Derek begged, reaching out to touch my arm. "Please. It meant nothing. I'll fire her right now. You can't take the company from me. You can't do this to our family!"
I looked down at his hand, then back up to his desperate, lying eyes.
May you like
"You did this to our family," I whispered, picking up my gold clutch. "You just thought I was too small to do anything about it."
I stood up from the table, my white silk dress flowing around me. I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I simply walked out of the ballroom, leaving my husband and his mistress sitting in the smoldering ruins of an empire they never truly owned, knowing that my daughter and I would never have to live in a house built on lies ever again.
