Chapter 4 - The First Question

Scarlet did not let Robert into Elias’s life immediately.

She spoke with a lawyer.

She spoke with a therapist.

She spoke with her sister, Naomi, who had never forgiven Robert for making Scarlet feel invisible during their marriage.

Finally, she agreed to one supervised visit.

One hour.

A public children’s museum.

No lawyers. No cameras. No promises.

Robert arrived twenty minutes early.

He had bought no expensive gifts.

No branded toys.

No oversized stuffed animal with a ribbon.

He had brought only a small book about airplanes because he remembered Scarlet loved traveling before she married him.

Elias arrived holding Scarlet’s hand.

At first, he refused to look at Robert.

Then he noticed the book.

“Plane,” he said.

“Yes,” Robert answered. “Do you like planes?”

Elias nodded.

“Up high.”

“Very high.”

For nearly thirty minutes, Robert followed Elias through the museum as he touched model airplanes, pushed toy carts, and stared at a giant globe.

Robert did not try to hold him.

He did not call himself Dad.

He simply stayed.

When Elias tripped near the water table and began crying, Robert’s body moved before he could think.

He knelt beside him.

“You are okay,” Robert said softly. “That was a big surprise, huh?”

Elias looked at him with wet eyes.

Robert held out a hand.

The little boy considered it.

Then placed his tiny fingers in Robert’s palm.

Scarlet watched from several feet away.

Her chest tightened.

For years, she had imagined Robert as a father only in angry thoughts.

She imagined him too busy, too distant, too self-important to understand what a child needed.

But now he was sitting on the museum floor in an expensive suit, letting Elias wipe a tear-covered hand on his sleeve.

When the hour ended, Elias did not want to leave.

“Robert come?” he asked Scarlet.

Robert looked at Scarlet carefully.

She hesitated.

Then nodded once.

“Maybe next week.”

Elias smiled.

Robert did not.

Not because he was unhappy.

Because he knew better than to celebrate one small opening as if he had earned forgiveness.

Outside the museum, Scarlet stopped him.

“You can see him once a week,” she said. “For now.”

“Thank you.”

“Do not thank me. Be consistent.”

“I will.”

Scarlet’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“We will see.”

May you like

And for the first time, Robert understood that fatherhood was not a title he could claim.

It was something he would have to prove.
