Chapter 5 - The Apology That Did Not Ask for Anything

Six months later, David asked Natalie to meet him at a quiet café.

She agreed because she no longer feared him.

He arrived early.

He looked older.

Not dramatically changed, but diminished in the way people look when they finally have to live without the story they told themselves.

“Natalie,” he said, standing as she approached.

She sat across from him.

“What do you need?”

David nodded slowly.

“I do not need anything.”

She waited.

“I wanted to apologize without asking you to forgive me.”

Natalie studied him.

He continued.

“I cheated because I was selfish. I used your money because I thought I deserved it. I lied because I thought you would always stay. And when you finally left, I blamed you because it was easier than admitting I had ruined my own life.”

The café was quiet around them.

Natalie held her coffee between both hands.

“You did ruin it,” she said.

“I know.”

“And I need you to understand something.”

David looked up.

“You did not lose me because I found Chloe. You lost me because you kept making me feel alone long before she appeared.”

His eyes filled.

“I understand now.”

Natalie nodded.

“I hope you do.”

He took a breath.

“I am in counseling.”

“That is good.”

“I am working with the agency’s ethics review team while the case is resolved.”

“That is good too.”

“I am trying to become better.”

Natalie looked at him for a long moment.

“Then become better for the people you may hurt next,” she said. “Not because you think it earns me back.”

David lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

This time, he did not ask her to stay.

And that was the first thing he had done that showed he finally understood what love was not.

It was not ownership.

It was not dependence.

It was not a woman silently funding a man’s life while he betrayed her.

Love was safety.

Love was honesty.

May you like

Love was choosing someone even when no one else was watching.
