Chapter 2 - The Evidence They Thought Did Not Exist

Jimena’s office was small, bright, and silent.

She reviewed every paper in the blue folder with the patience of someone who understood that each document represented a moment Renata had survived.

“The deed is only in your name,” Jimena said.

“Yes.”

“The utilities?”

“Mostly in my name.”

“The transfers for repairs, groceries, and household expenses?”

“All mine.”

Jimena nodded and opened the security files.

The dining-room footage showed everything.

Saúl standing.

Renata refusing to lower her eyes.

The first slap.

Then the second.

Then all six.

It also showed Iván sitting still while Mateo cried.

Jimena paused the screen.

Renata looked away.

“You do not have to watch it again,” Jimena said gently.

“I do,” Renata replied. “I spent too long pretending it was not as bad as it was.”

Jimena nodded.

“Then we will use it properly.”

By noon, she had helped Renata file a police report for the assault and request protective measures for herself and Mateo.

The next step was the apartment.

Because ownership was clear, Jimena began the formal process to revoke permission for Iván’s relatives to remain there. She prepared written notices, documented the violence, and requested that any return to the home be supervised through the appropriate authorities.

“This may not be instant,” Jimena warned. “But they can no longer pretend they have a right to stay because they are family.”

Renata looked at the deed.

“For three years, I let them treat this place as if it belonged to them.”

“You were trying to keep peace,” Jimena said.

“And now?”

“Now you are setting a boundary.”

Renata breathed in slowly.

Then she signed every page.
