Chapter 2 - The Name Daniel Never Knew

Then Daniel was promoted.
At first, Claire told herself it was a good thing.
He became chief executive officer of Cross Development Group after the company’s founder retired unexpectedly. Daniel was only thirty-four, younger than most of the executives around him, and he treated the promotion as proof that every sacrifice he had made since childhood had finally meant something.
Claire was proud of him.
She hosted dinners for investors. She attended charity galas beside him. She smiled through conversations with people who only seemed interested in Daniel’s company, Daniel’s success, Daniel’s next project.
But slowly, Daniel changed.
The late nights became more frequent.
The business trips became longer.
The phone calls started happening in another room.
At first, Claire ignored the signs because she wanted to believe in the man she had married. She had spent years hiding her family’s wealth from him because she wanted to know his love was real.
Now she was hiding her pain from him for the same reason.
She wanted to believe the marriage was still real.
When she became pregnant with twins, Daniel seemed happy for exactly two weeks.
He bought a tiny pair of baby shoes. He kissed Claire’s stomach. He told her they should paint the nursery yellow because it would work whether they had boys or girls.
Then the pressure of his job returned.
Or maybe that was just the excuse he used.
By the time Claire was thirty-four weeks pregnant, Daniel barely came home before midnight. He stopped attending doctor’s appointments. He forgot the names they had chosen for the babies. He seemed irritated whenever she talked about the future as if the twins were an inconvenience scheduled at the worst possible time.
The night Claire went into labor, she had already been alone for nearly four hours.
Rain pounded the windows of the Bellevue house while contractions came closer and closer together. The doctor’s office had told her to go to Evergreen Memorial immediately because the babies were early and one of them had shown signs of distress during her last appointment.
She called Daniel.
And he chose Vanessa.
As paramedics loaded Claire into the ambulance, Rosa Martinez climbed in beside her. Rosa had worked for the Cross family for two years and had become more than a housekeeper. She was one of the only people who still looked at Claire with genuine concern.
“Breathe with me,” Rosa said, holding Claire’s hand.
Claire tried.
But every contraction stole the air from her lungs.
“My husband…” Claire whispered.
“He’ll come,” Rosa said.
Claire shook her head.
“No. He won’t.”
At Evergreen Memorial Hospital, doctors rushed Claire into labor and delivery. The nurses asked about her medical history, insurance, emergency contacts, and next of kin.
Claire answered mechanically.
When they asked for her husband’s name, she nearly laughed.
“Daniel Cross,” she said.
“Will he be arriving soon?” the nurse asked.
Claire looked toward the rain-streaked windows.
“I don’t know.”
The doctor entered minutes later, his expression grave.
“Mrs. Cross, one of the babies is in distress. We need to prepare for an emergency delivery.”
Fear moved through Claire so sharply that she could not speak.
Rosa leaned close to her.
“You are not alone,” she whispered.
But Claire felt alone.
More alone than she had ever felt in her life.
Across the city, Daniel was still at dinner with Vanessa.
Vanessa’s apartment was only ten minutes from the restaurant. She had been Daniel’s executive assistant for nearly a year, and she knew exactly how to make him forget the responsibilities waiting at home.
“You seem distracted,” Vanessa said as she poured more wine.
Daniel loosened his tie.
“Claire is having some kind of pregnancy panic.”
“Is she at the hospital?”
“She called an ambulance.”
Vanessa paused.
“Daniel, she’s carrying your twins.”
“She has doctors. She has nurses. She has Rosa. What exactly am I supposed to do there?”
Vanessa studied him.
“Be her husband?”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what it’s like being married to someone who makes every problem feel like a crisis.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes, but there was a small smile on her lips.
“I understand you deserve to be happy.”
Daniel lifted his glass.
“That’s all I want.”
At the hospital, Claire was rushed toward surgery.
The doctor explained that her blood pressure was rising dangerously. The twins needed to be delivered immediately.
Claire signed the consent form with a shaking hand.
Then, before the medication pulled her into a blur of fear and exhaustion, she asked Rosa for one thing.
“Call my father.”
Rosa hesitated.
“Mrs. Cross, are you sure?”
Claire closed her eyes.
For years, she had tried to prove that she could live without the Whitmore name protecting her. She had wanted Daniel to love her without knowing that her family owned one of the largest private companies in the Pacific Northwest.
But in that moment, she was not trying to prove anything.
She was a frightened woman in labor, abandoned by the man who had promised to stand beside her.
“Yes,” Claire whispered. “Call my father.”
Rosa found Charles Whitmore’s number in Claire’s private contacts.
He answered on the first ring.
“Claire?”
Rosa explained what had happened.
There was silence.
Then Charles Whitmore spoke in a voice so calm that Rosa understood immediately how serious he was.
“Tell the doctors to do whatever is necessary,” he said. “I am coming.”
Rosa swallowed.
“Sir, the roads are flooded. It may take hours.”
Charles did not hesitate.
“Then I won’t be taking the roads.”
Twenty minutes later, while Claire fought to stay conscious in the operating room, the sound of powerful rotors thundered above Evergreen Memorial Hospital.
Nurses rushed toward the windows.
Doctors looked up.
A black helicopter descended through the storm and landed on the hospital roof.
On its side was a silver emblem recognized across the region.
Whitmore Meridian Group.
And as the helicopter doors opened, Charles Whitmore stepped into the rain with a team of specialists behind him.
Claire’s father had come.
May you like
But Daniel had no idea that before the night was over, Claire’s secret would become impossible to hide.
And the man who had chosen his mistress over his wife and unborn children was about to learn exactly what he had thrown away.
