Chapter 5 - A Real Family, A Real Future

Dominic did not answer Carmine’s attack with chaos.
He answered it with evidence.
For years, Carmine had hidden behind the commission, using other families to carry out his threats while he remained untouchable. But Elias had spent decades collecting information—financial records, secret accounts, recordings, and proof of Carmine’s involvement in murders that had been blamed on rivals.
Dominic had always planned to use the evidence only if necessary.
Now it was necessary.
Three days after the attack, every major member of the commission received an encrypted package.
Inside were files proving Carmine had been stealing from their operations, paying informants, and planning to remove Dominic after taking control of the Russo shipping empire.
Carmine’s power collapsed in a single night.
Men who once feared him stopped answering his calls.
Allies became enemies.
And when federal agents arrived at his mansion with warrants, Carmine Falco had no one left willing to protect him.
Luca accepted a deal to avoid a longer sentence.
Carmine was arrested before sunrise.
For the first time in months, Harper slept without armed guards standing outside her door.
Six months later, spring returned to New York.
Madison’s treatment was working.
Her color had returned. Her laughter filled the penthouse again. She had started taking online classes and teasing Dominic every chance she got.
“You know,” Madison told Harper one afternoon, “for a terrifying mafia boss, he is surprisingly good at making pancakes.”
Dominic looked up from the kitchen stove.
“I heard that.”
“You were supposed to.”
Harper laughed.
It was a sound that had once felt impossible inside those marble walls.
The contract was still locked in Dominic’s office.
Neither of them had mentioned it since the attack.
But as their one-year anniversary approached, Harper could not ignore it anymore.
She found Dominic on the rooftop terrace late one evening, watching the Manhattan skyline.
The city lights reflected in his dark eyes.
“You are thinking too loudly,” he said.
Harper stood beside him.
“Our contract ends next week.”
Dominic went still.
“Yes.”
“I should probably start planning what happens next.”
“You do not have to leave.”
Harper looked at him.
“That is not what the agreement says.”
“I do not care about the agreement.”
“You should. It was your idea.”
“It was the worst idea I ever had.”
A small smile touched Harper’s lips.
“Dominic Russo admitting he was wrong? I should write this down.”
He stepped closer.
“I thought I needed a wife to make me look stable.”
His hand found hers.
“But you did more than that.”
Harper’s eyes filled with tears.
“You gave me a life I did not know I wanted.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and removed a small velvet box.
Harper stared at it.
“This is not another contract, is it?”
“No.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring. Smaller than the first one he had given her, but more beautiful because it meant something real.
“The first ring was for the cameras,” Dominic said. “This one is for you.”
He dropped to one knee.
Harper covered her mouth with both hands.
“Harper Hayes,” he said, his voice unsteady for the first time she had ever heard, “you were supposed to be a stranger. Then you became my wife. Then you became the mother of my child. Somewhere between all of that, you became the only person I trust with my heart.”
Tears rolled down Harper’s cheeks.
“Will you stay with me?” he asked. “Not because you need the money. Not because you signed a contract. Stay because you choose me.”
Harper laughed through her tears.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Then louder:
“Yes.”
Dominic stood and kissed her as the city glittered beneath them.
A few months later, Harper gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Dominic held their daughter in the hospital room with tears in his eyes, completely undone by the tiny hand wrapped around his finger.
“What should we name her?” Harper asked.
Dominic looked at Harper first.
“You choose.”
Harper smiled.
“Hope.”
Dominic kissed her forehead.
“Hope Russo.”
The man who had once believed love was weakness stood beside his wife and daughter, finally understanding the truth.
Power had never been the money, the fear, or the empire.
Power was having someone worth becoming better for.
And Harper, the woman he had hired to play his wife, became the reason he chose a different future.
