Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile

Vivian Lawrence did not expect Julian to come to her penthouse alone.
She was standing by the windows when he arrived, dressed in a silk robe, her dark hair perfectly arranged despite the early hour.
“You disappeared last night,” she said. “The entire city is talking about your maid.”
Julian shut the door behind him.
“Her name is Elena.”
Vivian poured herself coffee. “How touching.”
“Why did you access employee files?”
Her hand stopped.
For the first time, Vivian looked uncertain.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You searched Elena Brooks. You found her old surname.”
Vivian placed the coffee pot down carefully. “I was curious.”
“You sent someone to threaten her sister.”
Her face lost color.
“I did not.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
Vivian’s expression hardened. “You have no proof.”
Julian stepped closer. “Then help me understand why your family’s company is connected to Elijah Voss.”
Vivian looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew,” Julian said.
“No. Not everything.”
“What does that mean?”
Her voice became smaller. “My father handles business. I don’t ask questions.”
“You should have asked.”
“You don’t understand my family.”
“No,” Julian said coldly. “I understand perfectly. You saw something ugly, and you decided it was easier not to look.”
Vivian’s eyes filled with tears, but Julian did not soften.
“My father told me Elena was dangerous,” Vivian said. “He said she could damage everything. He said she had information connected to Voss.”
“And you believed him?”
“I believed he would protect us.”
“By threatening a child?”
“I didn’t know about Lily!”
Julian stared at her.
For a long moment, Vivian said nothing.
Then she whispered, “I only wanted Elena gone.”
The truth was almost pathetic in its simplicity.
Vivian had been jealous.
Jealous that Julian looked at Elena.
Jealous that someone wearing a servant’s uniform could hold a place in Julian’s memory that Vivian never had.
So she had used her family’s power to investigate Elena.
And once her father learned who Elena was, he had used Vivian’s jealousy to reach Voss.
“You humiliated her because you thought she was beneath you,” Julian said. “But you were afraid of her.”
Vivian looked at him with tears running down her face.
“I loved you.”
“No,” Julian replied. “You loved what standing beside me made people think about you.”
He removed his engagement ring from his pocket.
Vivian stared at it.
Then he placed it on the table.
“It’s over.”
By that afternoon, federal agents had begun investigating Lawrence Holdings and Elijah Voss’s shipping operation. But Voss had already moved.
A security camera captured him entering a warehouse in Queens with two men.
Another camera showed Lily’s father, Darren Cole, arriving thirty minutes later.
Elena watched the footage in Julian’s office.
“That’s him,” she said. “Darren.”
Her hands shook.
Julian stood beside her. “Your attorney says he filed an emergency custody petition this morning.”
“He’s working with Voss.”
“Yes.”
“They’re going to say I’m unstable. They’ll say I have a criminal past. They’ll use my old identity.”
Julian turned toward her.
“We won’t let them.”
Elena laughed without humor. “You can’t control everything with money.”
“No,” he said. “But I can make sure you have the best lawyers, the best investigators, and every resource needed to prove the truth.”
“I can’t accept that.”
“You can accept support without owing me your future.”
The words reached her.
Julian continued, “You saved my life when you were sixteen years old. You did not ask who I was, what I could give you, or whether helping me would be convenient. You just helped.”
Elena looked down.
“I am not trying to rescue you,” he said. “I am standing beside you.”
For the first time, she allowed herself to believe someone might mean that.
That evening, federal agents raided the Queens warehouse.
They found forged custody documents, falsified financial records, and evidence that Voss planned to use Lily’s insurance money through a fraudulent trust arrangement controlled by Darren Cole.
But Voss himself was gone.
And before midnight, Elena received a final message.
Bring the original box from your locker.
Or Lily disappears.

Elena stared at the screen.
The brass key around her neck suddenly felt heavier than steel.
