Chapter 21 - The Ghost in the Machine

The illusion of absolute peace is the most dangerous narcotic in the world. It lulls you into dropping your armor, convincing you that the fortress you built is impenetrable. For exactly six months, I inhaled that peace. I watched my twins run across the manicured lawns under our beautiful mái nhật roof. I cooked in my indestructible stainless-steel kitchen. I believed the war was over.

But apex predators do not get to retire. They just attract deadlier hunters.

It started on a Tuesday night, during a torrential spring thunderstorm. Mark and I were sitting in the living room, pouring over the quarterly projections for APT Vietnam. The numbers were staggering. Since absorbing Morgan’s liquidated empire, our valuation had shattered expectations. We were untouchable. Federal-level Meta protection, encrypted proxy servers, and a legal firewall that no government agency could breach.

Then, the lights in the estate flickered. Not a power outage. A systematic, rhythmic dimming.

My encrypted primary phone vibrated on the glass coffee table. The caller ID was blank. I never get blank caller IDs on that device. I answered it, putting it on speaker.

"Evelyn," a digitally altered voice whispered, echoing with a chilling, metallic resonance. "You built a beautiful kingdom. Stainless steel cabinets. Federal exoneration. But you forgot the golden rule of the digital underworld. When you cut off the head of the snake, the venom just seeps into the groundwater."

Mark stood up instantly, his protective instincts flaring as he moved toward the hallway where Liam and Lily were sleeping.

"Who is this?" I demanded, my voice turning to absolute ice.

"I am the architect of the system you think you conquered," the voice replied smoothly. "Morgan was a blunt instrument. A spoiled child playing with her father's toys. I am the code itself. And right now, I am looking at your children through the nursery camera."

My blood ran completely cold. Our internal security system was supposed to be completely isolated from external networks. I sprinted up the stairs, Mark right beside me, throwing open the nursery door. Liam and Lily were fast asleep, clutching their stuffed animals. But the red recording light on the ceiling-mounted security camera was blinking furiously.

The voice on the phone let out a slow, mocking laugh. "Your federal-level Meta protection is a joke. I just bypassed your two-factor authentication, wiped your offshore backup servers, and transferred five hundred million dollars of APT Vietnam's liquidity into an untraceable dark web ledger. You have exactly forty-eight hours to surrender the administrative keys to your entire syndicate, or I will turn your digital empire into a weapon that will hunt your family to the ends of the earth."

The line went dead. The war hadn't ended. The real villain had just logged on.
