Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Baby

The truth came apart slowly.
Piece by piece.
Like a wall that looked solid until someone found the first crack.
Dr. Martin Voss had treated Ethan and me during the difficult years when pregnancy seemed impossible.
We had trusted him.
He had listened to my fears.
He had reassured Ethan after every negative test.
Then, when I unexpectedly became pregnant, he called it a miracle.
A blessing.
A surprise.
But police found records showing Allison had accessed my medical portal through repeated password-reset requests during the weeks I was seeing Dr. Voss.
She had also accessed Ethan’s confidential medical records through the company insurance plan.
The records showed Ethan had a low fertility rate.
Not infertility.
But low enough that Dr. Voss had told Allison there was a possibility Ethan might struggle to father a child naturally.
Allison took that information and turned it into a weapon.
She assumed the baby could not be Ethan’s.
Or worse, she decided to make Ethan believe it.
But the truth was darker.
Years earlier, Ethan had provided a fertility sample during routine testing.
Dr. Voss illegally retained it.
Then, during what I thought was a standard follow-up examination, he used Ethan’s genetic material without our informed consent.
He performed an unauthorized procedure.
The baby was Ethan’s.
But the pregnancy was created through a violation neither of us had known about.
Allison wanted the pregnancy to become a question mark between us.
She wanted Ethan vulnerable.
Distrustful.
Lonely.
Dependent on her.
The affair had not been enough.
She wanted my marriage destroyed from the inside.
And when I returned home early and caught them together, her plan began collapsing.
The push down the stairs had not been part of the original scheme.
That made it worse.
It was panic.
Allison had tried to erase the immediate problem.
Me.
And my baby.
Ethan listened without blinking.
Then he asked Detective Cole one question.
“Was Claire aware of what Dr. Voss did?”
“No,” the detective said. “The procedure notes were altered. We believe it was concealed as a diagnostic examination.”
My hands began shaking.
The doctor I trusted had violated me.
The woman I called my friend had built a plan around my body.
My husband had betrayed me while I carried a child conceived through a secret no one had the right to create.
I turned my face toward the wall.
Ethan reached for my hand.
Then stopped.
His fingers hovered above mine.
“May I?” he asked.
I looked at him.
He had hurt me.
Not with violence.
But with neglect.
With secrecy.
With choosing the easy attention of another woman over the difficult work of protecting our marriage.
Still, he had asked.
So I nodded.
May you like
He took my hand.
And for a while, neither of us spoke.
