Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Baby

The truth came apart slowly.

Piece by piece.

Like a wall that looked solid until someone found the first crack.

Dr. Martin Voss had been the doctor who treated Ethan and me during the difficult years when pregnancy seemed impossible.

We had trusted him.

He had listened to my fears.

He had reassured Ethan when every negative pregnancy test made him quieter.

Then, after two years, we stopped trying.

Or at least, we thought we had.

Three months later, I conceived naturally.

That was what Dr. Voss told us.

A miracle.

A surprise.

A blessing.

But police found records showing that Allison had accessed my medical portal through a password-reset request during the weeks I saw Dr. Voss.

She had also accessed Ethan’s confidential health records through company insurance connections.

The documents revealed something none of us knew.

Ethan had a low fertility rate.

Not infertility.

But low enough that Dr. Voss had told Allison there was “a strong possibility” Ethan might never father a child without medical assistance.

Allison had interpreted that as proof.

Proof that my baby could not be Ethan’s.

Proof that I must have been unfaithful.

Or perhaps proof she could use to destroy me.

But there was more.

The fertility clinic had preserved a sample Ethan provided years earlier during testing.

Dr. Voss illegally used it without our knowledge.

He performed an unauthorized fertility procedure during what I believed was a routine follow-up exam.

He wanted to create a pregnancy.

Not because he cared about us.

Because Allison had made him care.

The plan was almost impossible to understand at first.

Allison wanted Ethan to believe I had betrayed him.

She wanted the baby to become a question mark between us.

She wanted to separate us before the child was born.

Then she wanted Ethan vulnerable.

Lonely.

Dependent on her.

Dr. Voss had created the pregnancy using Ethan’s own genetic material.

The baby was Ethan’s.

But Allison believed the unusual medical timeline would eventually create suspicion.

She intended to expose the truth only when it gave her maximum control.

The push down the stairs had not been part of the original plan.

That was worse.

It was panic.

When I caught Ethan and Allison together, Allison realized I might leave before she could manipulate the story.

So she tried to remove the immediate problem.

Me.

And the baby.

Ethan listened to Detective Cole explain everything without blinking.

Then he asked one question.

“Claire was unconscious during the procedure?”

“No,” the detective said. “But Dr. Voss altered the procedure notes. We believe he performed the transfer under the guise of a diagnostic examination.”

My hands started shaking.

The doctor I trusted had violated me.

The woman I called my friend had built a scheme around my body.

My husband had been unfaithful while I carried the child created through a betrayal none of us understood.

I turned my face toward the wall.

Ethan reached for my hand.

Then stopped before touching it.

“May I?” he asked.

I looked at him.

His fingers hovered above mine.

He had hurt me.

Not with his hands.

But with neglect.

With deception.

With all the moments he chose easy attention over the difficult work of protecting our marriage.

Still, he had asked.

So I nodded.

May you like

He took my hand.

And for a while, neither of us spoke.
