Chapter 5 - The Checkmate

Three thousand miles away, the sun was setting over the Amalfi Coast, casting a brilliant, warm gold across the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Clare Bennett stood on the terrace of a sprawling, private villa tucked into the cliffs of Positano. The Mediterranean breeze caught the edge of her linen dress. She rested one hand on the stone railing and the other on her pregnant belly, feeling the strong, steady kick of her child.

Behind her, the villa was quiet, safe, and paid for in full through a heavily layered, legally impenetrable trust that even the DOJ couldn't touch. She had not stolen a single dime of investor money; she had only taken the funds that were legally hers under their original, pre-fraud marital agreements, securing them before the federal freeze hit.

She walked over to the patio table, picking up her tablet.

The live feed from a Chicago news station showed Damen Ashford being led out of a federal courthouse in handcuffs. He looked aged, hollowed out, his face pale and his eyes darting frantically away from the flashing cameras. He had just been denied bail as a flight risk. Vanessa Hail was scheduled to testify against him the following morning.

Clare watched the man who had tried to discard her lose absolutely everything.

There was no joy in her chest, but there was a profound, unshakeable peace. She had excised a tumor from her life and ensured that the poison could never touch her child.

She turned off the tablet, leaving the screen dark.

"We're safe, little one," Clare whispered, looking out over the endless, glittering horizon. "The storm is over."

She walked back into the warmth of the villa, leaving Damen Ashford to drown in the wreckage of the world he had built, while she prepared to bring life into a brand new one.
