PART 4: Blood and Vows

The illusion of safety shattered on a Tuesday night.
A blizzard was raging outside, burying Chicago under a foot of snow. I was in the estate's massive kitchen, baking. It was a habit I couldn't break; kneading dough grounded me when my thoughts spun out of control. Sasha was asleep upstairs, and Dante was supposed to be at a sit-down with a rival faction, the Moretti family.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the kitchen burst open.
Dante stumbled in, followed by two of his top lieutenants. His white shirt was soaked in crimson. His face was pale, his jaw locked in a rictus of sheer agony.
"Secure the perimeter!" Lorenzo shouted into a radio. "The Morettis ambushed the meeting! We have a rat in the inner circle!"
My mixing bowl crashed to the floor, shattering into a dozen pieces. I rushed forward, catching Dante as his knees buckled. He was impossibly heavy, but adrenaline surged through my veins.
"Dante!" I screamed, pressing my flour-covered hands against the gunshot wound in his side. Blood welled up, hot and terrifying, staining my apron just like the coffee had a month ago.
"Get him to the table!" I ordered the lieutenants.
They hauled him onto the massive granite island. I didn't have a nursing degree, but I had spent enough time in hospitals with my mother to know how to stop someone from bleeding to death. I barked orders at Lorenzo, sending him for the trauma kit they kept in the security office.
Dante’s eyes flickered open. He looked up at me, his hand weakly reaching up to grip my wrist.
"Nerissa," he coughed, blood staining his perfect mouth. "If I don't make it... Lorenzo has orders. You and Sasha... a plane to Switzerland. Millions in a trust. You'll be safe."
"Shut up," I sobbed, pressing a wad of sterile gauze into the wound. "You are not dying on my kitchen table, Dante Cassano. You don't get to kidnap me, flip my entire life upside down, make me fall in love with you, and then leave me!"
His dark eyes widened slightly through the haze of pain. A faint, bloody smile touched his lips.
"You love me?" he whispered.
"I love you, you stupid, arrogant, beautiful man. Now hold still!"
It took the estate’s underground surgeon two hours to extract the bullet and stitch him back together. I refused to leave his side, holding his hand through the entire agonizing process. When he finally stabilized, they moved him to our bed.
I sat in a chair beside him, watching his chest rise and fall. My hands were stained with his blood. I finally understood the cost of loving a man who lived in the shadows. But as I looked at his sleeping face, the scar on his eyebrow, the harsh lines softened by exhaustion, I knew I couldn't walk away.
Two days later, the war ended.
Dante directed his empire from our bed. He discovered the traitor—a cousin who had sold him out to the Morettis. The retaliation was swift, silent, and absolute. The Moretti family was decimated, and Dante’s grip on the city became unbreakable.
On the fourth night, Dante was finally strong enough to stand. I was looking out the window at the falling snow when I felt his arms wrap around my waist from behind. He rested his chin on the top of my head, breathing in my scent.
"I have spent my life in the dark," Dante murmured softly. "I built my empire on fear and violence because I thought it was the only way to survive. But when you pressed your hands against my wound, when you fought for my life... I realized I don't want to just survive anymore. I want to live."
He turned me around to face him. He reached into the pocket of his slacks and pulled out a small velvet box.
When he opened it, my breath caught. It wasn't a gaudy, massive diamond meant to show off his wealth. It was a stunning, vintage ring—a delicate sapphire surrounded by small diamonds, elegant and deeply personal.
"You said I was your dream," Dante said, looking down at me with absolute vulnerability. "But you are my reality. You are the only pure thing in my world, Nerissa. Marry me. Let me protect you, let me worship you, for the rest of my life."
Tears streamed down my face. I didn't hesitate. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest.
"Yes," I cried, holding him as tightly as I could. "Yes."
The wedding was not held in a grand ballroom filled with the city’s terrifying elite. It was a private ceremony in a small, ancient chapel on the outskirts of the city. Sasha was my maid of honor, wearing a beautiful blue dress, completely healed from the trauma of our past poverty.

As I stood at the altar, wearing a simple white silk gown, Dante looked at me as though I were the only person on earth. The cold, calculating mafia boss was gone. In his place was a man wholly and completely devoted to the woman who had accidentally spoken her heart in an elevator.
When he finally kissed me, sweeping me up in his arms, the entire world outside faded away. I was no longer the broke, exhausted baker. I was the Queen of the Cassano empire. But more importantly, I was the woman who had brought light into the dark—and found my forever in the arms of my most dangerous dream.
