Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Massacre

When I strode through the revolving glass doors of Whitaker Holdings, the atmosphere in the grand lobby shifted instantaneously. The sheer, radiating fury pouring off me was palpable. Employees scrambled out of my way, their eyes widening in fear as I bypassed my private office on the top floor and took the executive elevator directly to the boardroom on the fiftieth level.

My mother was hosting a highly publicized luncheon with the board of directors and several key international investors. I knew she was finalizing a massive acquisition deal she had been boasting about for months. She sat at the head of the long, polished mahogany table, wearing a pristine white Chanel suit, sipping sparkling water and smiling flawlessly at a joke a wealthy investor had just made.

Claudia Wren, the assistant who had signed for Emma’s desperate letter and intercepted the calls, was standing near the door holding a tablet, playing the dutiful servant.

I pushed the heavy, brass-handled double doors open with enough force that they slammed violently against the paneled walls. The loud crash echoed like a gunshot.

The laughter died instantly. Every head in the room turned toward me.

“Miles, darling,” my mother said, her perfectly arched eyebrows lifting in mild, practiced surprise. “You aren't supposed to be back from London until tomorrow morning. We are right in the middle of a vital presentation.”

“Get out,” I said, not looking at her, but addressing the board of directors and the stunned investors.

The wealthy, powerful men and women around the table exchanged nervous, bewildered glances.

“Miles, what on earth has gotten into you?” my mother demanded, her tone dripping with manufactured, maternal patience. “We are discussing the Singapore merger.”

“I said get out!” I roared, my voice dropping to a low, terrifying register that made the senior vice president physically flinch in his chair. “This meeting is terminated. Leave the room immediately.”

Within fifteen seconds, the boardroom was entirely empty, the executives rushing out the doors like rats fleeing a sinking ship. The only people left were my mother, Claudia, and me. I walked slowly toward the head of the table.

My mother sighed, standing up and elegantly smoothing her jacket. “Whatever pathetic tantrum you are throwing, Miles, I highly suggest you compose yourself before you ruin our stock prices—”

I reached into my jacket, pulled out the forged Cease and Desist order, and threw it onto the polished wood table. It slid to a stop right in front of her manicured hands.

My mother’s eyes landed on the document. For a fraction of a second, the immaculate mask slipped. Her posture stiffened, and the color drained slightly from her cheeks.

“I saw Emma today,” I said, stopping mere inches from her. “And I met my son.”

Claudia let out a small, terrified gasp and took a frantic step backward toward the exit.

“Claudia,” I said, not taking my eyes off my mother. “If you walk through those doors, I will personally see to it that you are indicted for mail fraud, corporate espionage, and federal extortion. Sit down and keep your mouth shut.”

Claudia collapsed into a leather chair, weeping quietly into her hands.

My mother, however, quickly recovered her icy, aristocratic composure. She looked at the document and waved a dismissive hand, attempting to gaslight me one final time. “She is a manipulative gold digger, Miles. I protected you. That girl was entirely unsuitable for the Whitaker legacy. She would have bled you dry and ruined our reputation in this city.”

“You forged my signature to threaten a pregnant woman,” I said, the venom thick and heavy in my voice. “You used my security team to intercept my calls. You played God with my marriage, you starved my wife, and you tried to erase my child from existence.”

“I secured your future!” my mother snapped, finally raising her voice, her pristine facade cracking to reveal the ugly, desperate narcissism underneath. “You were blinded by sentimentality! I did what was necessary to preserve this empire! You are a Whitaker, and you will not breed with common trash!”

“This empire belongs to me,” I whispered, stepping so close she was forced to lean back awkwardly over her chair. “And you just lost your place in it.”

I pulled my phone out and placed it on the table. “I have already frozen your corporate accounts. Your black cards will decline in exactly ten minutes. You are officially removed from the board of directors, and your access to the family trust is suspended indefinitely pending a federal investigation into this forgery.”

“You wouldn't dare,” she hissed, genuine panic finally flooding her eyes as she realized I was completely serious. “I am your mother! I built you!”

May you like

“You were my mother,” I corrected her coldly. “Now, you are nothing but a massive corporate liability. Your penthouse is owned by the company; you have forty-eight hours to vacate. If you ever contact Emma or my son, I will not hesitate to bury you in a federal prison.”

I turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving her screaming my name, stripped of her wealth, her status, and the only thing she truly loved: her power.
