Chapter 4 - The Signature

Ethan froze. The security guards who had stepped forward instantly stopped.
"What?" Ethan choked out. "Margaret, you're our outside counsel. What are you doing?"
"I am outside counsel for Parker Innovations, yes," Margaret said coldly, pushing her glasses up her nose. "But I am in-house counsel for Morgan Holdings. The silent, private equity trust that provided the ninety-million-dollar seed capital for this company fourteen years ago."
Ethan’s face turned the color of wet ash. "Morgan Holdings... Clare's maiden name is Morgan. No. No, that's impossible. Clare is a..." He looked at his wife, frantically searching for the meek woman he had left in the kitchen.
"I'm a woman who believed in her husband," Clare said smoothly, walking to the head of the table and taking the pen from Margaret. "When you couldn't get a single bank to look at you, my grandfather's trust funded your entire life. I structured it blind because I wanted you to feel like you built it yourself. I wanted you to be proud."
She looked at him with the cold, dead eyes of an apex predator.
"But you're right, Ethan," Clare whispered. "I don't understand your world. Because in my world, we don't bite the hand that feeds us."
"Clare, please," Ethan begged, his knees actually buckling as the realization of his total ruin crushed him. "The Halverson deal... it closes today. We need the majority shareholder's signature or the company goes into default!"
Clare looked down at the merger documents.
"I know," she said.
She took the gold pen and drew a single, thick, black line through the signature block.
The Halverson executives gasped. Chloe let out a muffled sob by the door.
"Deal canceled," Clare announced to the room. She turned to Margaret. "Begin the asset liquidation of Parker Innovations. Fire the CEO. Fire the Vice President of Acquisitions. And freeze all corporate accounts immediately."
"Done," Margaret smiled.
Ethan dropped to the floor, grasping at the hem of the old blue dress he had mocked just five minutes earlier. He was openly weeping, a pathetic, shattered shell of a man.
"Clare! I'm sorry! I love you!" he sobbed. "You said you'd never let me feel ordinary!"
Clare looked down at him, stepping back so his tears wouldn't stain her shoes.
May you like
"You aren't ordinary, Ethan," the billionaire heiress said softly. "You're bankrupt."
Clare turned and walked out of the glass tower, leaving him to drown in the ruins of the world he thought he owned.
