Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s Mistake

Julianne, the twenty-five-year-old fitness instructor, believed she had won the lottery. She thought she was running away with a grieving, wealthy widower who was finally freeing himself from a "toxic, suffocating" wife.

But Julianne was sloppy.

While Arthur and the FBI secured the financial execution, I hired a private investigator to dig into her digital footprint. Julianne had been using a burner phone to text her sister back in Chicago, bragging about the impending payout. My investigator legally acquired the subpoenaed text logs through the ongoing fraud investigation.

Julianne: He said it’s just a matter of days now. The doctors said she won't make it through the weekend. We fly to the Caymans as soon as the insurance clears.

Sister: Are you sure you won't get caught? What about his wife?

Julianne: She's a hysterical mess. She has no idea about the money. David handled all the medical paperwork so she couldn't authorize the treatments. We're golden.

She knew. She knew David had intentionally blocked Lily’s life-saving treatment, and she was celebrating it over cocktails on a yacht.

I handed the text transcripts to the federal prosecutor. Julianne wasn't just a mistress; she was an accessory to insurance fraud and a co-conspirator.

On the morning of the fourteenth day, my phone buzzed. It was a text from David.

DAVID: Landing in Chicago at 4 PM. I feel incredibly recharged. I hope you've used this time to work on your anxiety. We need to have a serious talk about boundaries tonight.

I stared at the screen, a cold, empty smile forming on my lips. He was completely oblivious. He thought Lily was still languishing in the ICU. He thought the money was waiting for him. He thought he was coming home to deliver an arrogant lecture to a broken, compliant wife.

MAYA: I completely agree. See you at home. I’ve arranged a special gathering for your return.
