Chapter 2 - The Audit of Lies

By 9:00 a.m., the polished glass doors of Morgan Events Group were heavily guarded. I had spent twelve years letting Julian stand at the head of the conference table, mistaking his loud voice for leadership while I handled the actual mechanics of the empire. He had mistaken my quiet nature for submission. He was about to learn that the person who controls the numbers controls the world.

When Julian and Chloe desperately tried to badge into the lobby thirty minutes after I left them at the diner, their keycards flashed a hard, unforgiving red.

I stood in the center of the atrium, flanked by Marcus, our lead corporate attorney, and two uniformed security guards. The entire office staff watched in stunned, breathless silence as Julian banged his fist against the tempered glass.

I gave the security guard a nod. He opened the door just a fraction.

"Julian, Chloe," Marcus announced smoothly, slipping two thick manila envelopes through the gap. "These are your official termination notices. Because the preliminary internal audit has uncovered undeniable proof of financial embezzlement, your severance packages are null and void. You are forbidden from stepping foot on this property. If you attempt to access our servers or contact our clients, you will be arrested for corporate espionage."

"You can't do this, Victoria!" Julian shouted, the veins popping in his neck, entirely abandoning his curated CEO persona. "I built this company's client base! You need me!"

"I need a COO who doesn't expense luxury lingerie under 'vendor relations,'" I replied coldly, crossing my arms. "Your personal items will be mailed to whatever cheap motel you can afford now. Goodbye, Julian."

I turned my back and walked toward the executive elevators, the heavy glass doors locking definitively behind me.

The next three weeks were a relentless, grueling deep-dive into the darkest corners of the company's financials. With the help of a ruthless forensic accounting firm, we meticulously tracked every single receipt, invoice, and expense report Julian had ever signed off on. The thirty-eight thousand dollars I had found on my birthday was just the surface of a deeply rotten foundation.

Over a two-year period, Julian had methodically siphoned over one hundred and forty thousand dollars from the family trust. He had created phantom vendors, approved inflated invoices for Chloe’s "event designs," and routed the excess cash into a hidden offshore account. He wasn't just a cheating husband; he was a calculated, predatory thief who had exploited my trust.

My parents, devastated and humiliated, cut Chloe off entirely. When she showed up at their suburban home begging for a loan to cover her rent, my father handed her a packed box of her childhood belongings and shut the heavy oak door in her face. The safety net she had relied on her entire life had evaporated overnight.

Meanwhile, Julian hired a loud, aggressive divorce attorney. He filed a motion demanding fifty percent of my assets, claiming that his firing was "wrongful termination" and trying to bully me into a massive financial settlement. He thought I would crumble under the threat of a public trial. He severely underestimated the woman he had married.
