Chapter 3 - The Engagement Dinner Demolition

The rain was still pouring when I pulled my Audi up to the valet stand of the restaurant. I didn't hand the attendant my keys; I simply left the car running in the driveway and walked through the heavy mahogany doors.

The private dining room was situated at the back of the restaurant, glowing with warm candlelight and the soft clinking of crystal glasses. Inside sat the elite inner circle of the Mercer empire. My mother, Eleanor, sat at the head of the table in a stunning emerald gown. Beside her was Amelia Brooks, the polished, wealthy socialite my mother had handpicked to be my perfect corporate bride.

When I opened the double doors, the conversation stopped. My mother’s smile froze as she took in my appearance. I was soaked to the bone, my hair plastered to my forehead, my expensive suit ruined, and my eyes burning with a rage so profound it felt nuclear.

"Ryan, darling, what on earth happened to you?" my mother gasped, standing up. "Amelia has been waiting for an hour. The board members were starting to worry."

"I took a detour," I said, my voice echoing off the acoustic panels of the private room. I walked slowly to the center of the table, pulling the velvet ring box from my pocket.

Amelia smiled tentatively, assuming this was some grand, dramatic entrance. I didn't look at her. I opened the box, extracted the three-carat diamond, and dropped it into my mother's half-full glass of champagne. It sank to the bottom with a heavy, final clink.

"Ryan!" Amelia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

I kept my eyes entirely locked on the woman who gave birth to me. "I saw Grace today, Mother. At a bus stop in the rain."

Eleanor’s face instantly drained of all color. The elegant, untouchable matriarch suddenly looked like a cornered animal. She opened her mouth to speak, to spin a lie, to manage the crisis like a PR emergency, but I didn't give her the oxygen.

"You didn't just hide my wife," I said, my voice deadly calm, carrying to every corner of the silent room. "You hid my children. Three of them. My blood. My heirs. You threatened a terrified, bleeding, pregnant woman and forced her into poverty while I was on a plane to Tokyo, securing the wealth you worship."

The board members gasped, looking between me and my mother in sheer horror.

"Ryan, you don't understand," Eleanor stammered, stepping back. "She was a distraction! She was weak! I did it for the family's legacy. I did it for you!"

"You did it for control," I fired back, stepping closer until she was forced to look me in the eye. "And in your quest for control, you nearly signed my daughter's death warrant. Lily has leukemia, Mother. She is fighting for her life in a public ward while you sit here drinking vintage champagne and arranging my life like a chessboard."

I turned my back on her and addressed the board members. "Effective immediately, I am resigning as CEO of Mercer Holdings. I am liquidating my founder's shares, and I am cutting all personal and financial ties with this family. If any of you attempt to contact me, or if my mother comes within fifty miles of my children, my legal team will release the details of this extortion to every major news outlet in the country."

I looked at Amelia, who was sitting frozen in her chair. "I'm sorry, Amelia. You deserve a man who is actually present, not a ghost haunting a boardroom."

I didn't wait for a response. I walked out of the private dining room, leaving the smoking ruins of my old life behind me. I had a daughter to save.
