Chapter 3 - The House They Never Owned

Ethan arrived at the mansion that evening.

He did not have his key.

Every access code had already been changed.

He stood outside the gates for nearly twenty minutes before Hector allowed him into the front drive.

I watched from the foyer as he entered.

He looked exhausted.

His suit was wrinkled. His tie was loose. His expression was a mixture of fear, anger, and the confidence of a man who still believed he could talk his way out of anything.

“Sophia,” he said.

I remained standing beside the staircase.

“Your bags are in the guest wing.”

He stared at me.

“What?”

“You will not be staying in our bedroom.”

“You cannot be serious.”

“I have never been more serious.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“I made a mistake.”

“You made hundreds.”

“Lauren was vulnerable.”

“She is pregnant with your child.”

He went silent.

“You knew?” he asked.

“I heard her say she was tired of hiding.”

His face collapsed.

For a moment, I saw no calculation.

Only guilt.

Then it passed.

“I did not plan this.”

“You planned a house.”

“I can fix this.”

“You cannot fix what you did,” I said. “You can only face it.”

He looked around the mansion.

“This is my home too.”

“No,” I replied. “It has always been mine.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You are going to throw me out over an affair?”

“This is not about the affair.”

I handed him a folder.

Inside were the transfer records, the shell-company filings, and the mortgage documents for Lauren’s apartment.

His hands shook as he read them.

“You had me investigated?”

“I had my company protected.”

“You are trying to ruin me.”

“No, Ethan. I am stopping you from ruining me.”

He looked up sharply.

“You loved me.”

“I did.”

The past tense hit him.

I saw it.

“I loved the man I thought you were,” I continued. “But that man never existed.”

Ethan reached toward me.

I stepped back.

The movement was small.

But it changed something in his face.

For years, I had moved toward him.

I had apologized first.

I had forgiven first.

I had believed first.

Now I was done.

“You will be contacted by my attorneys tomorrow,” I said. “Do not remove anything from this home. Do not access company systems. Do not contact Lauren about the investigation.”

“You cannot tell me who to talk to.”

“I can when the conversation concerns evidence in a criminal financial investigation.”

Hector appeared at the end of the hallway.

Ethan looked at him, then back at me.

“You planned all of this.”

“No,” I said. “You did.”

Ethan left the mansion an hour later.

He walked out with two suitcases and no driver waiting for him.

The man who loved to arrive in luxury cars, expensive watches, and tailored suits had to call a taxi.

I watched from the upstairs window until his car disappeared through the gates.

Then I turned away.

May you like

Not because I was heartless.

But because I finally understood that the woman who loved him could not survive if she continued protecting the man who destroyed her.
