Chapter 2 - The Architecture of a Lie

Three agonizing days later, my phone finally rang. The moment I heard Winston's grave voice on the other end of the line, I knew the reality I had lived in for the past twelve months was about to violently collapse.
"Bennett," he said quietly, the heavy silence on the line amplifying the dread in my stomach. "You need to sit down."
I gripped the edge of my mahogany desk. "What did you find, Winston? Tell me right now."
"Eleven months ago, Josephine was admitted to a county hospital while she was pregnant," Winston revealed. The room suddenly felt suffocatingly small. My lungs forgot how to pull in air. "She listed you as her emergency contact, Bennett."
I gripped the phone so hard the plastic creaked. "I never received a call. Not a single voicemail, not a message. Nothing."
"I know," Winston replied, the grim reality settling over the conversation. A heavy, sickening silence followed. "Because someone paid a significant amount of cash to a hospital administrator to have those records permanently removed and the notifications blocked."
My breathing stopped completely. "Who?"
"I sent the documents to your encrypted email. Look for yourself."
My hands shook violently as I opened the PDF file on my laptop. I scrolled to the bottom of the black-market payment authorization. Staring back at me in bold, undeniable print was a name. Felicity Danforth.
"No," I whispered to the empty room. But it was only the beginning of the nightmare.
Over the next week, Winston uncovered a labyrinth of deceit so sophisticated and evil it made me physically ill. The hotel photographs used to accuse Josephine of cheating? Forgeries created by a hired graphic designer. The witness who claimed to see her with another man? A struggling actor paid fifty thousand dollars in cash. The money I thought she had stolen from my accounts had actually been systematically siphoned through offshore shell companies controlled by Felicity's brother.

Even the final nail in the coffin—my mother's missing diamond necklace—had been a setup. Winston recovered deleted home security footage from a hidden cloud server showing Felicity herself slipping the necklace into Josephine's dresser drawer while we were out to dinner.
I ran to the nearest bathroom and threw up. For an entire year, I had punished an innocent woman. While Josephine carried my children alone, terrified and destitute, she had tried desperately to reach me. Her phone calls were blocked on my device. Her emails were intercepted and deleted. Her letters simply vanished from the mail pile. Every single path back to me had been systematically destroyed by the woman sleeping in my bed. Felicity hadn't just ended my marriage; she had stolen my entire family.
