Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Ruin

When Grant came home that evening, he found me sitting on the living room sofa, knitting a soft yellow blanket. I looked up and gave him the exact same adoring, exhausted smile I had given him for a decade.

"How was your day, darling?" he asked, loosening his expensive silk tie and leaning down to kiss my cheek. He placed a large, perfectly wrapped box on the coffee table. "I bought something for the nursery. A silver music box. Only the best for our children."

"It’s beautiful, Grant. Thank you," I whispered, resting my head against his arm as he sat beside me. He placed his large hand over my stomach, projecting the image of a fiercely protective father. I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away. I let him feel the warmth of my body, knowing it was the last comfort he would ever steal from me.

The next morning, I told Grant I was spending the day at a prenatal yoga retreat. Instead, I drove to the financial district of downtown Seattle. I didn't go to our joint attorneys. I walked into the offices of Sterling & Vance, the most ruthless, terrifying corporate litigation and medical malpractice firm on the West Coast.

I sat across from Marcus Vance, a silver-haired shark of a lawyer who reviewed the digital backups I had pulled from Grant’s old phone. Marcus did not speak for twenty minutes. He simply read the transcripts, the offshore wire transfers, and the falsified clinical consent forms.

When he finally looked up, his eyes were lethal.

"Dr. Keller committed criminal medical fraud, extreme ethical violations, and battery by implanting foreign biological material without your informed consent," Marcus stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Your husband committed conspiracy, wire fraud, and severe financial extortion against his employee, Maya Bennett. What do you want to do, Claire?"

"I want the embryos legally recognized as my children, establishing my maternal rights through gestation and intent, completely severing any claim Maya Bennett might have," I said, my voice completely devoid of tears. "Then, I want Dr. Keller’s medical license revoked and his clinic liquidated. And finally, I want my husband destroyed. Financially, socially, and legally."

Marcus smiled, a terrifying expression that perfectly matched the ice in my veins. "We will freeze the clinic’s assets by the end of the week. We will subpoena Maya Bennett quietly to secure her testimony against Grant. But to trap your husband completely, we need him to publicly acknowledge his control over the process. We need him arrogant."

"That won't be difficult," I replied, standing up and smoothing my maternity dress. "He’s throwing a massive, catered baby shower for me in three weeks. The entire board of directors will be there. Dr. Keller is on the guest list."
