Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

The criminal trial was a spectacle.
Ethan and Margaret were both charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and conspiracy.
To save himself, Ethan tried to cut a plea deal.
He offered to testify against his own mother, claiming she was the mastermind and he was just too afraid to stop her.
Margaret retaliated by releasing audio recordings she had secretly kept on her phone.
Recordings of Ethan complaining about me.
Recordings of Ethan explicitly asking her to “take care of the Emily problem.”
They destroyed each other.
Neither of them showed an ounce of loyalty.
When wolves are trapped, they eat their own.
I didn’t have to testify.
The video and the audio recordings were enough.
Three weeks after they were locked in jail without bail, I went into labor.
I delivered a perfectly healthy baby girl.
I named her Maya.
When I held her for the first time, I cried not from pain, but from overwhelming relief.
She was safe.

She would never know the monsters who shared her DNA.
She would only know the mother who fought to survive for her.
