Chapter 5 - The Throne Room

One year later.
The sprawling estate overlooking the Chicago skyline was bathed in the warm, golden light of a summer evening. The bulletproof glass windows had been thrown open, letting the cool breeze roll through the immaculate, bustling hallways. The oppressive, tomb-like silence that had haunted this fortress for years was completely gone.
I sat at the head of the massive, custom-built dining table in the grand hall, watching my capos and lieutenants laugh, drink, and celebrate a highly successful, exceptionally lucrative quarter. The Rossi family had been utterly dismantled, their territories absorbed into my empire without a single shot being fired on my home turf since that fateful night. The city knew that Danny Romano was not a crippled victim; he was an untouchable king.
But my greatest victory wasn't the empire I had reclaimed. It was the woman walking out of the kitchen, carrying a bottle of vintage champagne.
Emma was no longer wearing a grey maid’s uniform. She was wearing a breathtaking, tailored emerald-green dress that hugged her curves flawlessly. The dark, hollow circles under her eyes were permanently erased, replaced by a radiant, glowing vitality. Her mother was thriving in a private, luxurious care facility, and Emma was thriving as the undisputed lady of the house.
The men at the table respectfully lowered their voices and offered polite nods as she walked past. They didn't fear her because of me; they respected her because she was just as formidable, just as sharp, and fiercely protective of the family we had built together.
She walked over to the head of the table, wrapping her arms around my neck from behind, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek. “Luke says the shipment from New York arrived smoothly,” she murmured, her hands resting comfortably on my shoulders.
“Good,” I smiled, reaching up to cover her hand with mine, my thumb brushing over the massive, flawless diamond engagement ring sparkling on her finger. “That means we can take the weekend off. I have a physical therapy appointment tomorrow morning.”
The entire table paused. Luke looked at me, a wide, genuine grin breaking across his scarred face.
For two years, I had violently rejected physical therapy, throwing things at doctors and drowning in self-pity because they couldn't promise me I would ever walk again. But Emma had changed everything. She hadn't demanded that I walk, but she had demanded that I live. I was attending aggressive, grueling physical therapy five days a week. The doctors still maintained that I would never fully regain the use of my legs, but I was building the core strength to stand in braces, to transfer independently, and to ensure that my body remained a fortress of strength. I wasn't fighting to walk away from my life; I was fighting to be as strong as possible for the woman I loved.
“Therapy is going well, boss?” Luke asked, raising his glass.
“It’s torture,” I laughed, pulling Emma around to sit in the chair directly beside me. “But my nurse is incredibly demanding.”
Emma rolled her eyes, her smile bright and infectious. “Someone has to keep you in line, Danny.”
I looked around the table, at the empire I had secured, the loyal men who stood by my side, and the beautiful, brilliant woman who had walked into the darkness of my life and flooded it with light.
I raised my glass of champagne. The room instantly fell silent, every eye locked on the head of the table.
“To family,” I toasted, my voice ringing out with absolute power, looking directly into Emma’s beautiful eyes. “And to the women who remind us that a man’s strength is never measured by how he stands, but by who he chooses to protect.”

“To family!” the men roared back, raising their glasses in unison.
As the clinking of crystal echoed through the grand hall, Emma leaned her head against my shoulder. I wrapped my arm tightly around her waist, pulling her close. The sniper’s bullet had tried to steal my life, but it had only paved the way for my true destiny. I was a paralyzed mob boss who had terrified a city, but the exhausted maid who had fallen asleep in my bed hadn't just saved my life; she had given me a reason to rule the world.
