Chapter 4 - The Apex Succession

Marcus screamed, but the sound was instantly silenced by the sharp crack of Elena’s pistol.
The luxurious bedroom fell entirely silent, save for the distant wail of sirens my loyal men had likely triggered the moment the internal gunshots rang out. I stood by the shattered window, looking out over the glittering, ruthless skyline of Chicago.
My empire was intact, but it was hollow. My bloodline was a failure.
I turned around. Elena was meticulously wiping her fingerprints from the weapon. She didn't look sickened. She didn't look afraid. She looked like a woman who had finally balanced a ledger that had been bleeding for twelve years.
“The police will be here in five minutes,” I told her, walking over to my floor safe. I punched in the code, the heavy steel door swinging open to reveal stacks of untraceable cash and blank passports. “Take whatever you need. Disappear. You have my word, no one in this city will ever hunt you.”
Elena didn't move toward the safe.
She calmly set her pistol on the desk, straightened her posture, and looked me dead in the eye.
“I didn't wait three years just to run away, Vincent,” she said, her voice steady and commanding. “Marcus was weak. He was reckless. Your capos know it, and your enemies know it. You need someone who understands patience. Someone who knows how to move through a room without being seen. Someone who doesn't miss.”
I stared at her, the sheer audacity of her words hitting me harder than the betrayal of my own nephew.
She didn't want freedom. She wanted the throne.

A slow, dark smile spread across my face for the first time that night. The old lion hadn't just survived an ambush; he had just found his true heir.
“Pick up the gun, Elena,” I ordered softly, pulling a fresh magazine from my desk and tossing it to her. “We have a mess to clean up. And starting tomorrow, Chicago is going to learn exactly who really runs this house.”
