Chapter 3 - The Penthouse TrapThe pieces clicked together with horrifying precision. The poison. The manufactured sympathy. The subtle, psychological seeds she had been planting for months, suggesting to my board of directors that the stress of the company and the difficult pregnancy were breaking my mind. She was building a narrative of an unstable billionaire who would inevitably crack when his wife died in childbirth.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from Vanessa.
“Mason, I’m at the penthouse. I found the red binder. But there’s a problem. Your safe was already open, and the original medical files are missing. Did Claire move them?”
She was inside my home. With my private documents. She was attempting to destroy the original trust files and replace them with her forged copies to finalize her coup. She thought she was the smartest person in the room. She thought she had outplayed a billionaire who was too distracted by grief to notice.
She didn't know I had just opened the smart-home application on my encrypted phone.
I typed in the twelve-digit master override code. With a single tap, I permanently locked down every reinforced steel door, bulletproof window, and elevator shaft in the penthouse. The security shutters slammed shut, sealing the luxury apartment like a concrete vault.
I texted her back: “You won't find the files, Vanessa. But you will find the police.”
Leaving Detective Ruiz and a team of armed tactical officers en route to the penthouse to arrest the trapped rat, I turned my attention to the disease rotting inside my own company. Vanessa couldn't have authorized the insurance forgery without a secondary executive signature. She had an accomplice. Someone with enough financial clearance to bypass the internal auditors.
I left the hospital and drove directly to the Sloane Infrastructure glass tower in downtown Atlanta. It was 3:30 AM, but I summoned the entire executive board for an emergency meeting. I didn't care if they were sleeping. I didn't care if they were terrified.
When I walked into the massive, glass-walled boardroom, twelve of my highest-ranking executives were sitting around the obsidian table in rumpled suits, bleary-eyed and whispering frantically about the rumors of Claire’s collapse.
I stood at the head of the table. I didn't yell. I used the exact "billionaire voice" Claire always teased me about—cold, absolute, and utterly merciless.
“At 10:15 PM tonight, my wife was deliberately poisoned with a synthetic alkaloid in her maternity suite,” I announced.
The room erupted in horrified gasps and shouts, but I slammed my fist onto the heavy table with the force of a gunshot, silencing them instantly.

“The woman who executed the hit was Vanessa Vale,” I continued, scanning the terrified faces of the people I paid millions of dollars a year to trust. “But the man who authorized her fraudulent insurance policy, the man who gave her the digital keys to my empire, is sitting in this room.”
I locked eyes with Greg Chambers, my Chief Financial Officer. The blood completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the fluorescent lights.
