Chapter 5 - Safe Harbor

Six months later, the Oregon rain had given way to a bright, stunning coastal spring.

The scandal had faded from the headlines, replaced by the satisfying reality of Olivia Grant being sentenced to federal prison for grand larceny and wire fraud. Without Nathan at the helm, the Whitmore board had stabilized, and Nathan had officially transferred his remaining shares into a blind trust entirely in Clara’s name.

Emma was standing on the back deck of a massive, beautiful cedar-wood house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was their new home. Nathan had bought Harbor Light Books, allowing the owner to retire, and put the deed in Emma’s name, ensuring she always had her sanctuary. But they lived here, together, on the cliffs where the air smelled of salt and pine.

The glass door slid open, and Nathan stepped out onto the deck. He was wearing faded jeans and a simple gray sweater, carrying two mugs of hot coffee. Clara was strapped to his chest in a baby carrier, fast asleep, her tiny head resting safely over his heart.

He handed Emma a mug, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. “The contractor just finished the nursery extension. It looks perfect.”

“You look perfect,” Emma smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder.

Nathan looked out at the rolling waves, a profound sense of peace settling over his features. The restless, distracted billionaire was entirely gone. In his place was a grounded, devoted partner who hadn't missed a single dinner, a single bedtime story, or a single moment of their new life.

“I was thinking,” Nathan murmured, setting his coffee down on the railing. He reached into his pocket. “I know I said I would never ask you for anything again. I know I said I would just earn my place here every single day.”

Emma’s breath hitched as Nathan pulled a small velvet box from his pocket. He didn't drop to one knee—he couldn't, with Clara strapped to his chest—but he opened the box, revealing his grandmother’s antique diamond ring. The one Emma had left in Eleanor’s hand at the Plaza Meridian.

“I don't want to go back to who we were,” Nathan said softly, his blue eyes filled with an ocean of emotion. “I want to build a completely new life with the woman who saved my soul. Emma, will you put this back on? Will you let me be your husband, for real this time?”

Emma looked at the ring. She looked at the beautiful, sleeping baby on his chest. And she looked into the eyes of a man who had burned his entire empire to the ground just to keep them safe.

Tears spilled over her cheeks, but this time, they were tears of absolute joy. She set her coffee down, held out her left hand, and smiled.

“Yes,” Emma whispered. “Welcome home, Nathan.”

He slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss as the coastal wind wrapped around them. The storm was finally over, and in the quiet aftermath, they had built a love that nothing in the world could ever break again.
