Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Resurrection

The boardroom at Callahan Maritime was a temple of glass and steel, suspended eighty floors above Manhattan. Inside, Dominic stood at the head of a massive mahogany table, flanked by Vanessa Cole and his attorney, Charles Vane. Dozens of board members and prospective merger partners sat with their pens ready.

I watched the live security feed from a black SUV parked three blocks away.

"As you all know, this has been a tragic year for my family," Dominic was saying, projecting his voice with practiced sorrow. "My wife’s disappearance has left a void in my life. But I must look to the future. This merger will ensure Callahan Maritime remains a titan of industry. Let’s sign the documents."

Charles Vane slid the glossy contracts across the table. Dominic raised his gold fountain pen.

"Now," I said into my radio.

Before Dominic’s pen could touch the paper, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.

The room gasped.

I walked in. I wasn't wearing the soft, pastel maternity dresses Dominic used to force me into. I was wearing a razor-sharp crimson suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, unforgiving style. Flanking me were four armed private security contractors and Elias Thorne.

Safely tucked away in the SUV with a pediatric nurse and two more guards was Leo, completely out of harm's way. I didn't need to bring a baby to a bloodbath.

Dominic froze. The pen dropped from his hand, clattering against the wood. All the blood drained from his face, leaving him looking like a wax figure.

"Clare?" he choked out, stepping back as if he had seen a ghost.

"Hello, Dominic," I said, my voice echoing loudly in the silent room. I walked straight toward the head of the table. "You look surprised. Weren't you offering ten million dollars for my safe return? You can make the check out to Elias Thorne."

Vanessa Cole looked terrified, her eyes darting toward the exits. Charles Vane stood up, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Security! Remove this woman! She is a psychiatric patient!"

"Sit down, Charles, before I have you arrested for medical fraud," I snapped.

Elias Thorne stepped forward, tossing a massive stack of legal documents onto the center of the table.

"As of 8:00 a.m. this morning, this merger is entirely illegal," Elias announced, addressing the bewildered board members. "Clare Callahan is the legal executor and custodial guardian of the Castellano Legacy Trust, which owns exactly fifty-one percent of this company. Dominic Callahan does not have the authority to sell a single paperclip in this building without her signature."

"That’s a lie!" Dominic roared, his carefully crafted mask entirely disintegrating. "She’s insane! She lost the baby! She has no claim!"

I pulled a small remote from my pocket and pressed a button. The massive presentation screens behind Dominic flickered to life.

Suddenly, Dominic’s own voice filled the room, speaking in crisp Italian.

“She has served her purpose. She carries my son. After he is born, I throw the toy away.”

The board members gasped.

The audio shifted to the emails. Screenshots of Charles Vane’s messages discussing the fake psychiatric hold and the Swiss clinic kidnapping flashed across the screens, completely un-redacted.

"I am not insane, Dominic," I said softly, stepping so close to him I could smell the stale sweat of his panic. "And I didn't lose the baby. I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy boy. A boy with the Castellano bloodline. A boy who just fired you."

Dominic lunged at me.

He didn't make it two steps. My security team pinned him face-down against his own mahogany table.

"You bitch!" he screamed, thrashing wildly. "You have nothing! I made you!"

"You tried to break me," I corrected him, looking down at his pathetic, red face. "But all you did was show me how to conquer you."

The boardroom doors opened again. This time, it wasn't my security. It was the FBI.
