Chapter 4 - The Confiscation

The boardroom doors opened behind Adrien. Two of the corporate fixers from the hotel walked in.
"What now?" Adrien whispered, his voice completely broken. "You're firing me?"
"I'm not just firing you," Evelyn said, standing up. She walked slowly down the length of the table until she was standing inches from the man who had tried to erase her. "I am seizing everything. The company. The estate in the Hamptons. The private jets. The art collection. It all served as collateral against the debt you just defaulted on."
"Evelyn, please," Adrien begged, the arrogant billionaire entirely gone, replaced by a terrified, hollow shell. "We've been married for nine years. I made a mistake. Camille means nothing."
Evelyn tilted her head, studying his face as if looking at a stranger.
"Julia," Evelyn called out.
Julia Mercer, the forensic accountant, stepped out from the shadows of the boardroom corner. She was holding a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside the bag, catching the fluorescent lights of the office, was the twelve-million-dollar diamond necklace.
Adrien gasped. "How did you—"
"Camille tried to leave the hotel with it," Julia said dryly. "Vanguard security intercepted her in the lobby. Since it was purchased with stolen corporate funds, it is company property. She is currently being questioned by federal authorities regarding possession of stolen assets."

Evelyn reached out and tapped the plastic bag.
"It really is breathtaking, isn't it, Adrien?" Evelyn whispered softly. "I’ll be sure to wear it to the charity gala next month. When I announce the new board."
