Lorenzo bypassed Aiden entirely, stepping into my space and completely shielding me from the rest of the room. The scent of expensive cologne and dark cedar enveloped me, grounding my frantic heartbeat.

He didn't look at me with pity. He looked at me with a ferocious, territorial heat.

"Do not waste a single tear on a man who cannot afford to breathe the same air as you," Lorenzo ordered softly, his bandaged hand lifting to gently cup my jaw.

Then, without turning his head, Lorenzo addressed the room.

"Aiden," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a register that promised absolute violence. "You no longer work here. In fact, if my men see your leased Honda within the Chicago city limits by sundown, I will ensure they find you in the bottom of Lake Michigan. Run."

Aiden didn't hesitate. He turned and sprinted out the back door, leaving his apron on the floor.

The rest of the kitchen staff stood completely paralyzed, terrified to even breathe as the most dangerous man in the city claimed their head pastry chef.
