Part 2: The Shield of the Syndicate

“It says Romano because she is a Romano now,” the man said, his voice as smooth and unyielding as aged bourbon.
The nurse gasped, clutching her clipboard to her chest, while the two massive bodyguards behind him shifted ever so slightly, a silent warning that demanded absolute obedience.
“You can’t do that,” I stammered, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. My arms instinctively tightened around my newborn daughter, pulling her warm, fragile weight against my chest. “You don’t even know me. You can’t just walk into a hospital and change a legal document!”
“I am Dante Romano,” he said simply, as if those three words explained how the earth spun on its axis. He stepped closer to the bed, dismissing the terrified nurse with a single, sharp flick of his wrist. She scurried out of the room, shutting the heavy wooden door behind her and leaving me entirely at the mercy of a man who radiated danger.
Dante pulled up a chair and sat beside my bed. Up close, his eyes were the color of a winter ocean—cold, deep, and relentless. “I didn't do it to steal your child, Claire. I did it to keep you both breathing.”
“What are you talking about?” My voice trembled. “I’m a nobody. I work at a bakery in the North End. Ryan is just a coward who couldn't handle fatherhood.”
Dante let out a dark, humorless chuckle. “Ryan Walsh is not just a coward. He is a degenerate gambler who owes three million dollars to the Volkov syndicate—a rival family that does not forgive, and certainly does not forget. When he skipped town four months ago, he didn't just leave you brokenhearted. He left you as collateral.”
The monitors beside my bed spiked. The steady beep-beep-beep transformed into a frantic, erratic rhythm as panic seized my throat.
“No,” I whispered, looking down at my sleeping daughter’s face. She was so tiny, her chest rising and falling softly against my hospital gown. “Ryan wouldn't… he wouldn't use us like that.”
“He didn't have to intentionally use you. The Volkovs monitor everything. They have eyes in the police departments, the banks, and the hospitals. The moment you checked into St. Mary’s and gave them Ryan’s name as your emergency contact, a red flag went up in their network.” Dante leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that stole my breath. “By the time you accidentally texted my private number—a number that previously belonged to a burner phone Ryan once used for his illicit bets—my men had already intercepted chatter that the Volkovs were sending cleaners to this floor.”
My blood ran cold. The metallic taste of fear coated my tongue. “Cleaners?”
“They were going to take the baby, Claire. They were going to use her to force Ryan out of hiding, and they were going to dispose of you because you are a loose end.” Dante’s voice softened, just a fraction, revealing a glimmer of humanity beneath his ruthless exterior. “But the Volkovs will never touch a child bearing the Romano name. In this city, my family’s name is an iron wall. By claiming her as my blood, I have placed you both under my absolute, untouchable protection.”
I stared at him, my mind spinning. A complete stranger had just rewritten my daughter's destiny to save her life. “Why?” I asked, tears finally spilling over my lashes. “Why would you risk a war for a woman you don't even know?”

Dante stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. For a brief second, his eyes lingered on my daughter, an unspoken sorrow flashing in their blue depths. “Because I know what it is like to be left defenseless in a hospital bed while the monsters close in,” he murmured quietly. He cleared his throat, the vulnerability vanishing as quickly as it appeared. “My men have packed your belongings. We have a private ambulance waiting in the underground loading dock. You are leaving this hospital, and you are coming home with me.”
I had no choices left. The life I knew was over, erased the moment I typed that wrong digit. I nodded, clutching my baby tighter. As Dante’s men moved in to escort us, I realized I was trading one nightmare for the unknown, stepping out of the firing line and directly into the heart of a mafia empire.
