Chapter 5 - The Checkmate

Julian walked into the room.
He didn't rush. He moved with the effortless, devastating authority of a man who owned the world. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his gaze sweeping the ballroom until it locked onto me and Leo.
He walked directly toward us, the crowd of alumni parting for him instinctively.
As Julian approached, the color that had drained from Melissa's face suddenly vanished from Ryan's as well. Ryan was a dealership manager. He lived and breathed automotive corporate structures. He knew exactly who was walking toward us.
"Mr... Mr. Sterling?" Ryan stammered, his posture instantly collapsing from arrogant bully to terrified subordinate. He practically bowed. "What an honor, sir. I’m Ryan Mercer. I manage the Northside Ford location. Your holding company just finalized the acquisition of our dealership group last week."
Julian stopped beside me. He didn't look at Ryan. He looked down at Leo, smiling warmly, before placing a protective, heavy hand on the small of my back.
"Is there a problem here, darling?" Julian asked me, his voice rich and calm.
Ryan’s eyes bulged. He looked at Julian's hand on my waist, then back to my face. The realization hit him like a physical blow, knocking the breath completely out of his lungs.
"Darling?" Ryan choked out. "Claire... you're married to Julian Sterling?"
"I am," I said, offering Ryan a smile that was entirely devoid of warmth. "And as of last week's acquisition, I am technically the majority shareholder of the Northside dealership group."
Melissa let out a small, pathetic squeak. She grabbed Ryan's arm, but Ryan was trembling so hard he couldn't even support her.
Julian finally turned his cold, calculating gaze onto Ryan.
"Mercer," Julian said, testing the name on his tongue like it was something foul. "I reviewed the regional performance metrics on the flight over. Your location is underperforming. And frankly, I don't employ men who point their fingers at my wife."
"Sir, please, it was just a misunderstanding," Ryan begged, the sweat beading on his forehead. The titan of the Holiday Inn was begging for his life in front of the entire graduating class.
"It's not a misunderstanding," Julian replied smoothly. "It's a termination. Your severance package will be mailed to you. Do not return to the lot on Monday."
Julian didn't wait for a response. He didn't need to. The execution was public, flawless, and absolute.
Julian scooped Leo up into his arms, kissing the boy's cheek, then offered me his free hand.
"Are you ready to go, Mrs. Sterling?" he asked.
I looked at Ryan, who was staring at his shoes in utter, bankrupt ruin. I looked at Melissa, who was standing in a puddle of spilled wine, realizing she had traded her best friend for a man who now had absolutely nothing.

"Yes," I said, taking my husband's hand. "I have everything I need."
We walked out of the ballroom together, leaving the shattered glass and the broken ghosts exactly where they belonged: completely behind me.
