Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

The heavy oak doors swung open.

The ballroom fell dead silent. Flashbulbs erupted, but they quickly stopped as the gravity of Silas Thorne’s presence sucked the air out of the room.

Reid stood at the far end of the long mahogany table, looking exhausted and desperate. Marissa sat behind him, scrolling on her phone, looking profoundly bored.

"Mr. Thorne," Reid said, forcing a charismatic smile and walking forward with his hand outstretched. "I can't tell you what an honor it is to finally—"

Reid’s voice died in his throat.

His outstretched hand froze in mid-air. His eyes bypassed Silas entirely and locked onto me. The color drained from his face so fast he looked as though he might faint.

"Claire?" Reid whispered, the word sounding like a sharp crack of glass in the quiet room.

Marissa looked up, her phone slipping from her manicured fingers and clattering onto the floor.

Silas did not take Reid's hand. He stepped smoothly in front of me, shielding me and the baby, forcing Reid to look at him.

"You are addressing my wife," Silas said. The words were softly spoken, but they carried the weight of an executioner's axe.

"Wife?" Reid choked out, his eyes darting frantically to the bundle in my arms. He did the math. The realization hit him with the force of a freight train. His knees visibly buckled. "Claire... is that...?"

"This is my son," Silas interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying, icy register. "And you are standing in my building."

Reid stumbled backward. "Your building? But the buyout... the contracts..."

"The contracts were signed ten minutes ago," Silas stated smoothly, tossing a leather folder onto the mahogany table. "Thorne Consolidated now owns a controlling interest in Ashford Industries. And as the new owner, my first executive decision is the immediate termination of the CEO."

The board members gasped.

"You can't do this!" Reid shouted, panic and devastation finally breaking through his polished exterior. He looked at me, tears welling in his eyes. "Claire, please. That baby... he's mine! He's my heir!"

"He has no father but the man standing beside me," I said, my voice steady, ringing clearly through the ballroom. "Nine months ago, you stood on the courthouse steps and told me Marissa was the life you were choosing. You told me not to be dramatic."

I looked at the ruined, broken man before me, feeling absolutely nothing but pity.

"I hope you understand what you just gave away, Reid. Because you are never getting it back."

I turned away. Silas placed a heavy, protective hand on the small of my back, guiding me out of the ballroom. We left Reid Ashford on his knees amidst the flashing cameras, entirely stripped of his company, his legacy, and his future, while I walked out with the only two things in the world that mattered.
