Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Ambush

The Suffolk County courthouse was a massive, imposing structure of granite and marble. I walked through the heavy brass doors wearing a flawless, tailored charcoal suit, flanked by Olivia and two private security contractors. I looked exactly like what I was: an untouchable titan of my profession.

Nathan was already sitting at the plaintiff’s table inside the courtroom. He looked pathetic. He was wearing a cheap, off-the-rack suit that didn't fit properly, his posture slumped, his eyes darting around the room with a mixture of arrogance and deep, suppressed panic. His attorney, a sleazy man with a shiny tie, looked entirely too confident.

When the judge—a stern, no-nonsense woman with thirty years on the bench—took her seat, Nathan immediately attempted to play his role. He forced tears into his eyes, trembling slightly as his lawyer painted the picture of a broken hero desperately trying to reconnect with his stolen children.

"Your Honor," Nathan’s lawyer whined, "Major Whitmore was suffering from a profound mental health crisis. Dr. Whitmore used his vulnerability to isolate his children from him. She possesses an exorbitant amount of wealth, while my client is facing severe financial hardship. We are simply asking for the financial means to allow a father to know his sons."

The judge looked at Olivia. "Counsel? Does your client have a response to these allegations?"

Olivia stood up slowly, adjusting her glasses. She didn't look angry; she looked bored, which was infinitely more terrifying.

"Your Honor, we do not have a response to a work of pure fiction. We do, however, have bank records," Olivia stated, sliding a massive, red-flagged binder across the table to the bailiff.

Nathan’s fake tears instantly stopped. The color completely drained from his face.

"In the eight years since my client gave birth to four premature infants, Mr. Whitmore has not paid a single cent in child support," Olivia began, her voice echoing off the marble walls like a gunshot. "He claimed military hardship. However, a forensic audit of his finances reveals that three days after abandoning his critically ill children in the NICU, Mr. Whitmore opened a hidden offshore account in the Cayman Islands. He actively diverted sixty percent of his combat pay, housing allowances, and promotional bonuses into this account to specifically avoid garnishment for his children’s astronomical medical bills."

"Objection!" Nathan’s lawyer shouted, his face turning purple as he scrambled to look at his copy of the binder. "This is irrelevant to the current custody petition!"

"It goes directly to the petitioner’s character and financial claims, counselor," the judge snapped, her eyes narrowing as she flipped through the irrefutable evidence. "Overruled. Continue, Ms. Vance."

"Furthermore," Olivia continued, closing the binder with a definitive slam, "we have sworn affidavits from his former commanding officer, General Hayes, and his former fiancée, Lauren Davenport. Both testify that Mr. Whitmore openly mocked his children, referred to them as a 'burden,' and bragged about using his military status to evade his legal responsibilities. He does not want custody, Your Honor. He is attempting to use the family court system to commit extortion against a wealthy physician."
