Chapter 13 - The Gala AmbushThere is a distinct difference between legal warfare and a public execution. In a courtroom, a corrupt billionaire can hide behind expensive attorneys. But in front of the press and his peers, the truth belongs to whoever holds the heaviest ammunition.

The Seattle Grace Annual Charity Gala was the crown jewel of the city’s social calendar. The grand ballroom of the Fairmont Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and false smiles. The elite of the medical and financial sectors mingled, entirely unaware that their kingdom was about to shatter.

Chairman Wallace Belmont stood on the main stage, holding a microphone, delivering a speech about "institutional integrity and the future of pediatric oncology."

He was untouchable. Or so he thought.

I did not have an invitation. I didn't need one.

I arrived at the hotel wearing a sweeping, floor-length gown of midnight blue velvet. I looked immaculate, unbothered, and utterly lethal. Hayes walked beside me in a sharp black tuxedo, radiating an aura of terrifying, silent power that forced the security guards to hesitate just long enough for us to breach the ballroom.

When Belmont saw me walking down the center aisle, his smug smile completely vanished. The color drained from his face.

"Security," Belmont barked into the microphone, his polished composure shattering instantly. "Remove that woman. She is on administrative leave and is trespassing!"

Four heavy security guards moved to intercept us.

"If you touch my client," Hayes’s voice boomed, projecting a lethal, legal authority that stopped the guards in their tracks, "I will personally see to it that this hotel is named in a federal obstruction lawsuit. Step aside."

The guards looked at Hayes, looked at the absolute lack of hesitation in his eyes, and physically backed away.

I didn't stop until I reached the edge of the stage. I didn't yell. I didn't raise my voice. I simply held up a sleek, encrypted digital tablet.

"Good evening, Wallace," I said smoothly, my voice carrying clearly to the front rows of journalists and wealthy investors. "I apologize for crashing your self-congratulatory party. But since you attempted to ruin my career this morning based on fabricated evidence, I thought it was only fair to return the favor."

"This is corporate defamation!" Belmont shouted, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Someone get her out of here!"

"I am not defaming you, Wallace," I corrected him, staring dead into his panicked eyes. "I am exposing you."

I tapped a single button on my tablet.

The massive digital screens behind the stage—screens meant to display the hospital's logo—suddenly flickered. They shifted to display a highly detailed, forensic financial ledger.

"While you were busy conspiring with my convicted ex-husband to frame me for fraud," I announced to the room of horrified donors, "my team was auditing your offshore shell companies."

The ballroom erupted in a collective gasp.

"This ledger proves that Wallace Belmont has been actively attempting to siphon the fifty-million-dollar oncology grant to cover his failing real estate margins in Dubai," I continued, my voice sharp and lethal. "He fabricated the dossier against me to remove the only person who stood in his way."

"That is a lie!" Belmont roared, spit flying from his mouth as the flashbulbs of the press cameras exploded around us. "She hacked my servers! This is illegal!"

"It is a voluntary disclosure of suspicious financial activity, submitted to the FBI," I replied coldly. "You used a smear campaign to try and silence me, hoping I would back down before I uncovered your money laundering. You didn't investigate me, Wallace. You tried to assassinate me to cover your own tracks."

The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

A dozen federal agents from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Task Force marched down the aisle, their badges flashing in the dim light. They bypassed me completely and marched straight up the stairs onto the stage.

"Wallace Belmont," the lead agent boomed, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and embezzlement. Put your hands behind your back."

Belmont stumbled backward, entirely paralyzed. The arrogant, ambitious billionaire was reduced to a pathetic, shivering criminal in front of every major news outlet in the state.

"You ruined me!" he shrieked as the agents wrenched his arms behind his back.

"No, Wallace," I said softly, offering a cold, devastating smile. "I just balanced the books."
